JAMES GAGE, SCHOHARIE COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY FOR 9 YEARS
Esperance -- Former Schoharie County District Attorney James L. Gage, 83, of Gage Lane, died Thursday at Albany Medical Center Hospital after a short illness.
Born in Esperance, Mr. Gage was a 1927 graduate of Cobleskill High School and a 1931 graduate of Union College. He earned a law degree from Harvard University in 1934. In 1935 he was admitted to the bar and remained in practice until the time of his death.
Mr. Gage was born in the building where his law ofice is located in Esperance.
From 1940 to 1942, he served as Schoharie County attorney. He was elected district attorney in 1941 and served until 1950. He was the Republican county chairman from 1958 to 1960 and a member of the Republican State Committee.
Mr. Gage was a member of the Schoharie County Bar Association. He was elected to the board of directors of the Central National Bank of Canajoharie, serving from 1952 until 1966, when he became chairman of the board. He was one of the incorporators and a member of the original board of directors of Community Hospital of Schoharie County. At the time of his death, Mr. Gage was director of the Schoharie County Arts Council. He was also director of the Schenectady Mutual Insurance Association from 1931 until the time of his death and served as attorney for the association.
Mr. Gage was a member of the Mohawk Golf Club of Schenectady and the Terrace Council of Union College. He was co-operator of the Fonda Speedway for more than 20 years. Mr. Gage was recently the guest of honor of the Speleological Society for his donation of a cave to the society. He was a member of the Sloansville United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Sarah E. Whitbeck Gage; a son, James L. Gage, Jr. of Esperance; and a daughter, Marion G. Crandall of Winchester, Mass.
The services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the Esperance Methodist Church. Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at the church. Burial will be in Esperance Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Esperance Fire Department and the Esperance Methodist Church. Arrangements are by the Lappeus Funeral Home, Sharon Springs.
