Hiram worked as a deck hand on the ferry which ran back and forth across the Hudson from Garrison, Putnam County, New York, to West Point Military Academy. It was said of him that he had met every prominent politician and businessman of the day, as a common outing for these individuals was to take the train north from New York City, disembark at Garrison, and be ferried over to West Point to make an official visit, then reverse the journey.
Shortly after his marriage in 1876 to Carrie Hopper, Hiram apparently decided to seek his fortune by moving west to Ligonier, Indiana, where his brother Edwin Reeve had been operating a successful general store. The family remained there at least through the summer of 1880, as the 1880 federal census reveals that they were still in Indiana at that time. However, they returned to Garrison some time after that, where Hiram resumed his duties as deck hand on the West Point ferry. They remained there until 1892 when Hiram took employment in Syracuse, New York.
