Sir Robert Erskine was one of the most prominent members of his
family. He was knighted before 1343. He appears to have acted as High Chamberlain after the battle of Neville's Cross in 1346, although he is not officially named until 1350. He held the office continuously until 1357 and from April 1363 to December 1364. He was very active in promoting the release of David II; his son Thomas was one of the hostages for the king in 1354. Later, in 1357, he was sent to England to negotiate the king's ransom. He ratified the final treaty, and his son, Thomas was once again a hostage,
In 1359, he applied for a dispensation and release from a vow he made to go on Crusade, pleading that the king's business and frequent wars prevented him from going on Crusade. He was employed on a number of embassies to England, France and the Papal Courts. He was the keeper of Stirling Castle.
He received a number of grants of estates from Robert II (while as his steward and as king), David II and others. He made grants to the Abbey of Crambuskenneth in 1361.
Sir Robert was an active partisan of Robert Stewart in his claim for the throne after the death of David II. He did homage at the coronation of the new king in 1371 and was also present when the succession to the crown was secured to the Stewart family. He frequently attended Parliament and council up to 1384.
