At the the age of 15, Ora's parents both died of pneumonia, and he
with siblings; Phebe, Peter, Alice, and Irene were sent from New York
State to Nebraska to live with their maternal grandmother, Phebe
(Montanye) Gallup.
Ora and Florence had a farm and most of their children were born in
Mapleton, IA. Because of the depression, they were forced to move in
1933. They went to Philip, SD, where they unsuccessfully farmed. They
decided to immigrate to Idaho in 1935.
They traveled through the Sandpoint, ID area, and settled near
Princeton, ID. They stump-farmed at Hatter Creek, ID, near Princeton,
and worked at the lumber mill as well, for many years. Ora went to work
at Potlatch Corporation in Lewiston, ID and retired there. They moved to
Genesse, ID, then Yahahts, OR, and finally settled near their daughter
Helen M. (Gage) Johnson, in Canby, OR, where they lived the rest of their
lives. They are both buried near their son Gerald Eugene Gage, in
Moscow, ID.

ORA S. GAGE, 98, FORMERLY OF LEWISTON, POTLATCH
OREGON CITY, Ore. Ora S. Gage, 98, of Canby, Ore., a retired Potlatch
Corp. employee formerly of Lewiston and Potlatch, Idaho, died Sunday of
causes related to age at the Willamette Falls Hospital here.
He was born April 5, 1892, at Esperance, N.Y., the son of Orlando and
Edith Gage. His parents died in 1908, and he and his brothers moved to
Nebraska to live with their maternal grandmother.
He served with the U.S. Army from 1910 to 1913.
He and Florence Shawver were married Sept. 5, 1917, at Lyons, Neb.
They farmed at Mapleton, Iowa, until moving to Idaho in 1935.
From 1935 until his retirement in 1957 he worked at Potlatch Corp. in
the dry kilns department, first at Potlatch, Idaho, then at Lewiston. He
also farmed.
On Sept. 5 of this year he and his wife celebrated their 73rd wedding
anniversary.
Survivors include his wife; five sons, Orland, Don and Duane, all of
Lewiston, Bernard of Princeton, Idaho, and Byron of Seattle; three
daughters, Marian Johnson and Elaine LaRue, both of Canby, and Pauline
Becker of Waldport, Ore.; 33 grandchildren, 49 great-grandchildren and 23
great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St.
Patrick's Catholic Church at Canby with the Rev. Robert Cieslinski
officiating. Burial will be 11 a.m. Friday at the Moscow Cemetery.
