(3) 1849, 16 Aug: H.H. Lewis wrote Benjamin Ogle Tayloe at Lenox, MA, from Washington, "M y Brother George has since lost his wife & four servants with the same disease, & has been ve ry ill himself. However he is now much better & has come up to consult Dr. Miller. I am happ y to say that all those who have been attacked are convalescent, and that none of your relati ves have had a single case on their plantations. We have had very recent letters from Mount A iry, Sabine Hall & Powhatan as well as from Buena Vista. Col. Carter & daughters will be her e on Wednesday next, for a single day, en route for Winchester Springs... My Brother, Ann e & myself will probably join Col. Carter & daughters & go to some of the Virginia Springs ne ar Winchester. We will go merely to accompany my Brother, whose health will require somethin g besides the prescription of the Doctors, & they recommend change of air & scene... Our Cit y presents a very well & quite aspect. We are (humor?) (enlivened?) by a little Scandal no w & then, which serves to keep up a circulation amongst a certain class for the purpose of re tailing it... Paine Todd has behaved very badly to Anna Paine & abused her very much. The poo r girl has been very ill & not expected to live from day to day. She is now much better & ha s moved to Mr. Nourse's into the Country yesterday afternoon. Todd has made a bed room of th e front Parlour & goes about the house with a long morning gown on, but without his breeches ! The ladies wish to purchase a pair to send him as they have been shocked when they went t o see Anna Paine. The property will be sold, I hear, under a deed of trust, and as the greate r portion of the money will be required at once, it may go cheap. I hear that General Totten , Richard Smith & some others want it, which may cause it to be run up. I shall attend the sa le, and if it be reasonable will buy it myself... The family are all well & desire most affec tionate love to yourself, Mrs. Tayloe & the children. If I knew when you would be in New Yor k Anne & myself would meet you there & we could return together."
