Notes for Anthoine Johannot:\
This man is placed tentatively as the ancestor of the other Johannot's of Annonay. According to La France Moderne, the family appeared in Annonay in 1634, when brothers Barthelemy and Mathieu bought the mills at Faya and there established a paper factory. They were, according to this reference, originally from Ambert, in Auvergne. The death record of Anthoine is the only case we have found where Auvergne is mentioned, though he was not the first of the family to die in Annonay. There do not seem to be any other mentions of this origin in the many birth and marriage records which appear as early as 1637, and there are no other mentions of this Anthoine. The other three of this name were born in Annonay to Pierre (1637), Mathieu (1638),and Jean (1653), who appear to be brothers. On the other hand, the elder Anthoine does not seem to appear at any of the baptisms, so his relationship is speculative at this time. \

Of the children attached here, Barthelemy and Mathieu are listed as brothers in La France Moderne. As Jean and Pierre appear at the same time and seem to be approximately of the same generation, they are assumed to be brothers also. The original death record for Anne reads "soeur des papetiers", so she must belong to the same generation. \

A notation in the Armorial du Vivarais (1908) mentions a bequest of Anthoine Johannot in 1662 to Pierre Johannot, son of Anthoine's brother Mathieu. The reference turns out to pertain to a later generation. Further information cited in the Armorialpoints to information in files at the Archives of Lyon (which had jurisdiction for taxation) as well as the Archives of Ard\'e8che (jurisdiction in civil matters), and a work by W. Poidebard, "MSS et notes h\'e9raldiques et g\'e9n\'e9alogiques concernant les pays de Lyonnais, Foret, et Beaujolais." In the latter, apparently, is a full account of the history of the family from its arrival in 1634 down the the "present day", represented by a Mlle. Marguerite Johannot daughter of Henri and Marie Leblanc of Annonay. \
