Dearest Marie
This afternoon father visited me to discuss the wretched affair of the lawsuit. (WHAT LAWSUIT?) He then showed me an account of approximately f.1400 Thus I would at once be required to pay f.700.=
I told him that I would not consider it for one moment as it was impossible for me to withdraw such an amount from the business all at once.
I would then have to await any further action the lawyer might take
You do understand that it is impossible not so. Now I would appreciate it if you would discuss the matter with him (FATHER, LAWYER?), and in the following manner.
From 1 May next I will obtain a season ticket for Leiden (TRAJECTKAART?) and then transfer my household to Leiden which will save me at least f.8.= a week.
Then I will pay off f.10.= of the debt each week until that amount has been settled.
It is a wretched affair but in order to avoid any unpleasantness it seems to me to be the best solution.
We will have to put the wedding on hold for the time being.
If we wish it - zullen ze wel een das halen-( DON'T KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS), but as you will dislike it, I thought to deal with it in this manner.
If by any chance you know of some better way then act upon it in whichever way you think best. At any rate the matter should be discussed as little as possible.
Place the matter of the rent and the money lent from you on the carpet at the same time then they (LAWYERS?)would have to come to the conclusion that I am even further in debt than my previous partner.
(HE APPARENTLY HAD A PARTNER WHO WOULD HAVE BEEN LIABLE FOR THE OTHER f.700.=. ALSO IT APPEARS THAT `MARIE" LENT HIM MONEY.
Where does the partner fit in as the business name is apparently an acronym: HOKA. Hoge Kamp )???You asked me about my grey hairs, but I have more worries about our future than you may be aware of. I find it more annoying for you than for myself.
You know as well as I do that we would really like to get married but as long as such matters continue to crop up it cannot be considered at the moment.?.
(WHY THE QUESTION MARK?)
Instead of the support of your parents I would get nothing but opposition from them. I regret to have to say it but the fact remains.
Next Thursday I am coming home because I still have to fetch money in Hillegom and will then personally discuss the matter very calmly.
Goodbye then and be of good heart. As always your loving liefhebbendemanneke (DIFFICULT TO TRANSLATE THE DIMINUTIVES IN ENGLISH WITHOUT
SOUNDING MAUDLIN. `loving little man'!!.)
Piet.
