The following "local gossip" was taken from the Asher Altruist, a weekly local paper.
"J.H. BUTTS, a republican candidate for justice of the peace of Avoca township, [Avoca is now an unincorporated town just north of Asher], is making an active canvass. MR. BUTTS is a good man, and ought to be unanimously elected."
-Asher Altruist (24 Oct 1902)
J. H. Butts, who has been ill for some time, continues unimproved and was reported to be very low Monday morning.
(Shawnee Morning News, Wed. 16 Mar 1927)
Note: It's interesting that J. H. had already passed away early Tuesday morning and this was published Wednesday. News must have traveled slow then.

J. H. Butts Dies—J. H. Butts, pioneer farmer of Asher community, passed away Monday night, after an illness of many weeks. Mr. Butts was among the most prominent and successful farmers of Asher district and he and Mrs. Butts reared a large and interesting family in the community, all members of whom were at the old farmstead during the last week of the illness of their father. The funeral took place Wednesday afternoon.
(Shawnee Morning News, Thurs. 17 Mar 1927)
Note: J. H. must have actually passed away early Tuesday morning rather than Monday night, as his headstone records his death as Mar 15, a Tuesday.
