COHOES -- John J. Gillie, 62, of Springhollow Dr., Cohoes, NY, died Sunday, April 2, 2000 surrounded by his wife and children at Community Hospice of Albany Memorial Hospital, after a long battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife, Sandy Smith Gillie (with whom he would have celebrated 40 years of marriage in August); his children, Stacie and Bill Sorel III of Cohoes and Pam and John `Peppy` Gillie of South Pasadena, CA. Peppy was his pride and Stacie was his joy.; his mother, Mary Spickler of Troy; a brother, Tony Gillie of Lansingburgh; a sister, Peggy Aurelius of Troy; a brother-in-law, Roland Smith of Ballston Spa and a sister-in-law, Karen Smith of Cohoes, several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews, also survive him. He was a longtime best friend of Joan and Frank Young of Cohoes. Most importantly, he was a loving and devoted Papa to his three adored grandsons, Billy and Joey Sorel of Cohoes and Tate Gillie of South Pasadena, CA. John was born in Troy and resided most of his life in Cohoes. He was a graduate of Cohoes High School and Hudson Valley Community College. On September 1, 1995 he retired from Amerada Hess Corp in Rensselaer, where he had worked in the terminal. He loved sports, especially the Cleveland Indians, North Carolina Tarheels and his beloved Cleveland Browns. John was involved in many youth recreation programs including CYO Basketball, Little League, etc. He was an active member of the Cohoes Citizens Party and served on many City Commissions and Planning Committees, as well as serving as Third Ward Alderman. John's family was his life. Because of this love it is in their names that he had donated his remains to the Anatomical Gift Program of Albany Medical College. There will be no memorial services and please no sadness and tears. His family asks only that you remember John as you knew him. His family would like to express their thanks and appreciation to the staff of Capital District Oncologists (especially the Latham Group), Community Hospice of Albany and the sixth floor nursing staff at Albany Memorial Hospital. No words can describe the dedication, care, compassion and love exhibited by this most extraordinary group of people in the world.
