Johannes immigrated in Sept 17, 1733 with his wife and three childen on board the ship "Pennsylvania Merchant", arrived in Philadelphia, PA In 1733, Johannes Riegel, Sr. founded the family home on Mill Creek in Tulpehocken Township, there was a little Log Cabin Church less than a mile from where the home was built. This Church was built on the brow of a hill that overlooked the Riegel home and Mill Creek to the south. It was called St. John's (Host) Church, founded in 1727. Host meaning a gathering place for the multitude. United Christ Church was added later to the title. In 1754 two acres of the Riegel land, plus lands of adjoining neighbors, was sold and know to be the Host Church property. This Church was more specifically identified with followers of the German Reformed. However members of the Lutheran Church attended the same Church until they established one of their own faith. The pioneer Riegel family in Tulpehocken were followers of the Reformed Church, as a result of the Calvinist teaching in Germany. Several members of the family were buried in the old cemetery south of Host Church. The eldest son, Matthies and his descendants in Bucks County were also followers of the Reformed Church and contributed to its support, land and building projects. However many of the following generations were found to be Lutherans, as they moved and established homes further west. Some of the descendants in Ohio were found to be ordained ministers of the Evangelical Lutheran Church.
