William Stone was born about 1608 at Hereford, near Guilford, Surrey, England. He was in Hertfordshire about 1610. William and his brother John came to this country with Rev. Henry Whitfield's first company which sailed from England in May, 1639, in two ships. When the ships were about ten days out, a covenant was signed. In July the "St. John" entered the harbor of Quinnipack or New Haven, the first vessels from across the ocean to reach that port. They purchased land from the Mohegan Sachem Uncas and named it Guilford after Guilford, England, where many of them had lived.
He was a tailor by trade. He kept the first tavern in Guilford, Connecticut. He also owned a farm. He married Hannah Bradley in England before 1639. She died before 1653 in New Haven, Connecticut. William married again in 1659. He died 16 November 1683 in Guilford, Connecticut.

Disputed Origins
https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Stone-1398
In many genealogies published in the Victoria era it is romantically stated that he arrived on the ship "St. John." However, no evidence exists for the name of the ship(s) that came to settle the Guilford Plantation and based on the estimated size of the settlement (300-400 people) there was probably three or four ships carrying 100+ people and supplies per ship.
William Richard Cutter (1906) simply lists his origins as the county of Herefordshire.[22] Robert Charles Anderson in the Great Migration Directory (2015) lists his origins as unknown.[5] In The American Genealogist (1981) the following was published regarding the origins of William Stone and his brother John of Guilford:
"They are alleged to be sons of the Rev. Samuel Stone who should be carefully distinguished from the man of the same name who settled in Hartford. He is confusedly described as of Herefordshire and of Hereford near Guildford, Surrey-- I should much like to know what the evidence for this statement is."[6]
