During a taped interview on 01 July 1995, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, at the residence of Geneva Aileen (SMITH) WELBORN PHILLIPS ANDERSON, Alice E. The SMITH's moved back to New Mexico (1948) because Henry Loyd SMITH Sr. became afflicted with Tuberculosis.
H. Loyd was working at Great Lakes Steel Co. They sold the house on McComb Rd. in Michigan, to move back to N.Mex. They also had a grocery store which was sold. Alice did not mention much about the grocery store.
H.Loyd SMITH recuperated from the Tuberculosis, but eventually died (1968) from a 5-year bout with cancer, in Albuquerque, N.Mex. His doctor was Dr. Lovelace, of the renowned Lovelace Clinic and NASA astronauts doctor, in Albuquerque.
Alice worked about six years at Ford's Automobile plant in Michigan, building headlights for Jeeps and tanks, used on the war equipment, during World War II. She claims to have had to work 10 hours per day, there, running a punch press. It was during this time that she nearly lost one of her fingers in an accident, which necessitated her being taken to a
hospital (she said is was called "Ford" Hospital) in Dearborn, MI. Alice also recalls they had over 300 acres on which they raised cows and chickens, soybeans, wheat, oats, potatoes, and other vegetables.
During the war, Alice stated that she and H.Loyd SMITH provided foodstuff and weekend meals to many families of the area; and that, for a time, she also raised two other boys.2 SOUR S518

Taped interview, 02 July 1995, at the residence of Alice Elmira (HENLEY)
SMITH. Alice Elmira says, she was named "Alice" after the mother of her

get their marriage license in Jonesboro, ARK. Alice told me that none
of the HENLEYs attended the service, as they were against the wedding.
During a taped interview on 01 July 1995, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, at
the residence of Geneva Aileen (SMITH) WELBORN PHILLIPS ANDERSON, Alice
E. (HENLEY) SMITH mentioned living on High Street, in Ecorse, Michigan.
She then mentioned about a house on McComb Rd, as "our" house. The house
on McComb was two-story and is still standing. The SMITH's moved to New
Mexico because Henry Loyd SMITH Sr. became afflicted with Tuberculosis.
H. Loyd was working at Great Lakes Steel Co. They sold the house on

which was sold. Alice did not mention much about the grocery store.
H.Loyd SMITH recuperated from the Tuberculosis, but eventually died from
a 5-year bout with cancer, in Albuquerque, N.Mex. His doctor was Dr.

about six years at Ford's Automobile plant, in Michigan, building

soybeans, wheat, oats, potatoes, and other vegetables. During the
wartime, Alice reports that she and H.Loyd SMITH provided foodstuff and
weekend meals to many families of the area; and that she also, for a
time, raised two other boys.
William Otis HENLEY moved to the Truman, Arkansas 1913 - 1929. This is
where Alice Elmira HENLEY met and married Henry Loyd SMITH. Alice states
that she was six weeks old when the HENLEY family move to ARK. The
HENLEY's moved from either McCracken County or Ballard County, KY. to
Hamletsburg, IL, where he worked on the farm of John WOOLDRIDGE. This is
where he met and married Nellie Mary WOOLDRIDGE. William. O. HENLEY had a
brother who stayed in Bandana (Ballard) KY., where he owned and operated
the J.A.Henley Store. Alice (HENLEY) SMITH told me that William Otis
HENLEY and family left Paducah, KY when she was about 6 weeks old. That
would have to be September or October 1910. They moved to Hamletsburg,
Illinois (the home of Nellie Mary (WOOLDRIDGE) HENLEY's family). Alice
claims to have gone to school in Illinois, which means that the HENLEY
family resided there several years.
