Thomas worked as a fuller of cloth as well as a buyer of cloth and an aletaster.
Now, the fuller softened the wool by treading on it barefooted or stirring it in a vat of week old urine and fuller's earth The ammonia would remove the oil from the wool and slowly felt up the cloth and the Fuller's earth clay would decolorize the wool. So, if one started out in this horrible occupation I can see why he later became an ale taster! Needless to say, several web sites list "Fuller" as one of the worst jobs of all time. I hope poor Thomas was well paid for his work.
Moriarty mentions the Manor Court Rolls for Bures and concerning the Bures Rectory 25 Sept. 26 Eliz. (1584) residents within the leet appear including Thomas Fylbrige. Also a view of frankpledge with court baron 2 June 38 Eliz. (1596). Thomas ffilbrigge amerced 3d as living within the precinct of this leet and not being within a tithing. And on 26 Oct. 6 James I (1608) at the first court of William Siday, gent., capital pledges include Thomas ffilbrigg and he was chosen to the office of aletaster. On 5 Oct. 18 James I (1620) at a Court Baron, Thomas Filbrige was chosen a searcher of cloths (scutator pannorum) and Thomas Filbrige junior sworn of the jury.

Due to the lack of wills by the families who lived in Bures, it's impossible to establish a lineage much before the father of Thomas Felbrigge/Philbrick (The Emigrant.) Thomas Felbrigge senior was probably the son of either Robert Felbrigge who was buried 28 June 1571 or Edward Filbrick buried on 23 November 1593. One might assume that Thomas born in 1564/5, son of William, is the senior Thomas Felbrigge but that would then make that "Thomas" ten years old when John, son of Thomas Filbrig, was born on January 9, 1575/6.
