THOMAS aka Joseph Bombardier - son of Charles & Domithilde/MathildeChesne/etc.
Baptized 19 Jun 1842 at the age of 4 months as THOMAS,Mont-St-Gregoire, parents domiciled in US

1850 USC - Joseph of age 9, w/parents
1860 USC - Joseph of age 16, w/brother Moise as hired hands - indexedas BOUCHER
1861 PLCC - Thomas of age 19, w/mother
1870 USC - NOT FOUND
1880 USC - NOT FOUND

1860 US Census - Plattsburgh - Home of Robert Hall - several hired menreside there.
Two are cited with the surname of BOUCHER, but I believe they arebrothers Moise and Joseph that I have not found elsewhere in the 1860:
Moses, 20, VT
Joseph, 16, VT

Per correspondent Bill Calhoun: Thomas in Civil War records andapparently the ancestor of a line in the South.

Thomas Bumbard of age 21 - enlisted at Chesterfield NY on 11 Nov 1863in Co L, 2nd Vet Cav Rgt NY and was mustered out on 8 Nov 1865 atTalladega AL.

Marvin Welborn is a descendant of the following. Family loreoriginally had the Civil War gent as Charles, but with proof ofCharles demise by 1861 and having never enlisted nor left NY, Marvinhas revised his information.

Thomas Joseph {Charles Edward} BOMBARD - Born in 1842 in New York.
Thomas Joseph {Charles Edward} died in Dec 1879 in Sodas, Old PleasantHill (Sabine) LA.

On 16 Jul 1865 Thomas Joseph {Charles Edward} married Olivia "Annie"DAVIS in Talledega, Alabama.

They had the following children:
Mollie (Molly)
Charles Everett "Charlie" (1873-1907)
Thomas Tommy (~1878-<1950)

Despite repeated searches with numerous search configurations, I havebeen unable to locate any Bombard in Alabama or Louisiana for the 1870census. The widow and children are residing in Louisiana with heruncle in 1880.

EDOUARD aka John Bombardier - son of Charles & Domithilde/MathildeChesne/etc.

Born 19 Jul 1844, baptized 14 Jan 1845, Mont-St-Gregoire as EDOUARD,parents domiciled in that parish

1850 USC - John of age 7, w/parents
1860 USC - Edward of age 16, farm laborer at Chesterfield - indexed asBARNHARD

Per correspondent Bill Calhoun: Edward in Civil War records.

Edward Bumbard of age 19 - enlisted at Chestefield NY on 12 Nov 1863in Co L, 2nd Vet Cav Rgt NY and was mustered out on 8 Nov 1865 atTalladega AL.
Enlisted one day after brother Thomas enlisted.

Despite repeated searches with numerous search configurations, I havebeen unable to locate Edward in any later censuses.

In reply to: Thomas-Joseph and Edouard-John Bombardier - sons of Charles & Domithilde Chesne Donald Farrington 1/13/09
First, a thank you to Marvin Welborn for his family information, and for his patience in listening to my explanations about the offspring of Charles and Mathilde.

Most of my information regarding Thomas is from the Civil War pension application of his wife Annie, which contains a lot of suggestive information that is no doubt accurate, but lacking in precision, as memories had faded by the time of the application. There are also some spurious dates included by various attorneys in an attempt to make some dates appear more precise.

Thomas may have died on Oct 10, 1879.

The children of Thomas:

Molly Effeline, d abt. 1879 (family lore).

Charles Everett, b 1872 (possibly December, possibly January of 1893), d 28 Aug 1908, m Emma Elizabeth Davis 13 Sep 1893, DeSoto Parish LA

Thomas, b 1878, d 1893 (possibly 29 July).

It is interesting that Thomas named his second son Thomas, and not his first son as one might expect. The first son was born shortly after the death of Thomas' brother Charles, and I think Thomas named his son Charles in honor of his brother. This may be the source of confusion about who Charles Everett's father was.

A note about the Louisiana placenames.Remember that counties in LA are called Parishes. There was a town called Pleasant Hill in DeSoto Parish, to which Thomas moved sometime after the Civil War.In 1881, a new town was built two miles away on the railroad line just over in Sabine Parish, and named Sodus. This town eventually replaced Pleasant Hill, and took its name.Old Pleasant Hill was abandoned.Thomas died in Old Pleasant Hill, and was buried in the Old Town Cemetery.Marvin tells me there's not much left, if anything, of the old cemetery. The town record of Thomas' death would have moved to Sodus, or Sodas, now Pleasant Hill in Sabine Parish.

Bill
