ROBERT, son of ROBERT "le Fort" Comte [de Tours], Marquis en Neustrie & his [second] wife --- ([860]-killed in battle near Soissons 15 Jun 923).¬â€  "Rodbertum fratrem Odonis regis" is named in the Cartulaire de Saint-Bertin[65].¬â€  He was installed as lay abbot of Marmoutier on the death of Hugues l·ÄôAbb√© in 886[66].¬â€  He succeeded his brother in 888 as Marquis en Neustrie, and probably also as Comte de Paris, d'Orl√©ans et de Tours.¬â€  After his brother King Eudes captured Poitou in 893, he installed Robert as Comte de Poitou but the latter was expelled by Ad√©mar, son of Comte Emenon[67].¬â€  Abbot of Saint-Martin de Tours:¬â€  "Robert abb√© de Saint-Martin" confirmed possessions of Saint-Martin de Tours by charter dated 30 Aug 894[68].¬â€  Eudes King of France granted the abbey of Saint-Hilaire de Poitiers to the bishop of Poitiers, at the request of "marchiones·Ä¶Hrobertus·Ä¶atque Ademarus", by charter dated to [894][69].¬â€  After the death of his brother in 898, Robert supported Charles III King of France who seems to have confirmed Robert's position in Neustrie.¬â€  ·ÄúRotbertus...beati Martini abba...et comes·Äù restored ·Äúcellul√¶...Sancti Clementis·Äù, previously donated by ·Äúpredecessor noster domnus Odo germanus noster...tunc abbas deinde Francorum rex·Äù, to Saint-Martin by charter dated 13 Sep 900, subscribed by ·Äú...Attonis vicecomitis, Guarnegaudi vicecomitis, Fulconis vicecomitis, Rainaldi vicecomitis...·Äù[70].¬â€  He rebelled against the king in 922, triggered by the confiscation of the monastery of Chelles by King Charles from Rothilde (who was the mother-in-law of Robert's son Hugues) in favour of his favourite Haganon.¬â€  He was elected¬â€ ROBERT I King of France¬â€ 22 Jun 922, consecrated at Reims by Gauthier Archbishop of Sens.¬â€  Flodoard records in 922 that "Franci" elected ·ÄúRotbertum seniorem·Äù who was invested ·ÄúRemis apud Sanctum Remigium ab episcopis et primatibus regni·Äù[71].¬â€  King Robert was killed fighting ex-King Charles, although his forces won the battle: Flodoard records in 923 that "Karolus cum suis Lothariensibus" crossed ·ÄúMosam...ad Atiniacum...et...super Axonam·Äù where he lost the battle near Soissons in which ·ÄúRotbertus...rex·Äù was killed[72].¬â€  The necrology of Chartres cathedral records the death "XVII Kal Jul" of "Rotbertus rex"[73].¬â€  The necrology of the abbey of Saint-Magloire records the death "XVII Kal Jul" of "Robertus rex"[74].¬â€  The necrology of Auxerre cathedral records that "Rotbertus rex" was killed in battle 15 Jun[75].¬â€
m firstly¬â€ ---.¬â€  The name of Robert's first wife is not known.¬â€  However, as King Robert's known wife B√©atrix de Vermandois could not have been the mother of his daughter Adela (married to the brother of B√©atrix) it is assumed that this earlier marriage is correct.¬â€ ¬â€  According to¬â€ Europ√§ische Stammtafeln[76], Robert's first wife was named¬â€ AELIS.¬â€  This may be based on the 21 May 907 donation of Rebais abbey to the church of Paris which refers to "comitis Rotberti et Adele comitisse"[77].¬â€  However, as shown below, this is more likely to refer to Robert and his daughter than to his wife.¬â€
m secondly¬â€ ([897])¬â€ BEATRIX de Vermandois, daughter of HERIBERT [I] Comte de Vermandois & his wife --- ([880/83]-after 26 Mar 931).¬â€  The¬â€ Historia Francorum Senonensis¬â€ records that "sororem Herberti" was the wife of "Robertus princeps" who rebelled against Charles III "le Simple" King of the West Franks[78].¬â€  Guillaume of Jumi√®ges records that ·ÄúRodbertus dux·Äù married ·Äúsororem Herberti·Äù by whom he had ·ÄúHugonem Magnum·Äù[79].¬â€  "Hugo rector Abbati√¶ sancti Martini" names "genitoris nostri Rotberti quondam regis ac genitricis nostr√¶ domn√¶ Beatricis" in his charter dated 26 Mar 931[80].¬â€  The marriage date is estimated by Werner on the assumption that the marriage accompanied the political reconciliation between Beatrix's father and Robert's uncle[81].¬â€  If the 907 donation mentioned above in fact refers to Robert's first wife, his marriage to Beatrix would of course have taken place after that date.¬â€
King Robert I & his first wife had one child:
1.¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ [ADELA] (before 898-).¬â€  The Chronicle of Alberic de Trois-Fontaines refers to "comitis Heriberti gener·Ä¶Roberti" and in a later passage to the sister of "dux Hugo Cappatus" as the wife of "comitis Heriberti de Peroni, Campanie et Veromandie" but does not name her[82].¬â€  Her origin is confirmed by Flodoard naming "Hugo dux cum nepotibus suis, Heriberti filiis" in 943[83].¬â€  Her birth date is estimated from the birth of her first child in [915].¬â€  Her name is deduced as follows.¬â€  The 21 May 907 donation of Rebais abbey to the church of Paris refers to "comitis Rotberti et Adele comitisse"[84].¬â€  Although this phrasing usually indicates husband and wife, Settipani suggests that the chronology of the life of King Robert's son Hugues (attested as Robert's son by his second wife Beatrix) favours his birth, and therefore his father's second marriage, well before 907, which would mean "Adele" could not have been Robert's wife.¬â€  This reasoning appears based firstly on Hugues already being married in [914], and secondly on the probability of his having reached the age of majority when he was recognised as duke in 922.¬â€  The 907 document is therefore explained as referring to Robert and his elder daughter.¬â€  The issue, however, is not beyond doubt, especially if the document in question was misdated.¬â€ ¬â€ m¬â€ (before 21 May 907)¬â€ HERIBERT¬â€ [II]¬â€ Comte de Vermandois, son of HERIBERT [I] Comte de Vermandois[-Carolingian] & his wife [Lietgardis] --- ([880]-23 Feb 943, bur Saint Quentin).¬â€
King Robert I & his [first/second] wife had one child:
2.¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ EMMA¬â€ (-2 Nov 934).¬â€  Flodoard names "Emma regis Rotberti filia" when recording that she obliged Seulf Archbishop of Reims to consecrate her as queen at Reims in 923 in the absence of her husband fighting[85].¬â€  Rodulfus Glaber names "Emmam·Ä¶sororem·Ä¶magni Hugonis" as wife of "Rodulfus, Richardi ducis Burgundi√¶ filius", suggesting that she was instrumental in persuading her brother to support her husband's accession as king[86].¬â€  "Emme nostri imperii consortis" and "Emma coniux mea" is named in the charters of "Rodolfus Francorum rex" dated 21 Jun 931 and 1 Jul 931[87].¬â€  There is no indication whether Emma was born from her father's first or second marriage.¬â€  From a chronological point of view, it appears that both cases are possible.¬â€  Flodoard records the death of "Emma regina" at the end of his passage dated 934[88].¬â€  The necrology of the abbey of Saint-Germain-des-Pr√©s records the death "IV Non Nov" of "domna Emma regina"[89].¬â€ ¬â€ m¬â€ ([911/19])¬â€ RODOLPHE¬â€ [Raoul]¬â€ Comte de Bourgogne, son of RICHARD ·Äúle Justicier·Äù Duke of Burgundy & his wife Ad√©lais d·ÄôAuxerre [Welf] (-Auxerre, Yonne 15/16 Jan 936, bur Abbaye de Sainte-Colombe de Sens).¬â€  Flodoard names "Rodulfo filio Richardi"[90].¬â€  He is named "Rodulfo rex filio meo" in the grant of "Adeleydis comitissa soror Rodulfi" to Cluny dated 14 Jun 929[91].¬â€  Rodulfus Glaber names "Rodulfus, Richardi ducis Burgundi√¶ filius"[92].¬â€  He succeeded his father in 921 as Duke of Burgundy.¬â€  He was elected as¬â€ RAOUL King of France¬â€ in 13 Jul 923 at Soissons to succeed his father-in-law, consecrated by Gauthier Archbishop of Sens at the abbey of Saint-M√©dard de Soissons.¬â€  Flodoard records in 923 that, after King Charles III had retreated "trans Mosam", ·ÄúRodulfum...regem...[filius Richardi]·Äù was elected and consecrated ·Äúapud urbem Suessonicam·Äù[93].¬â€  Flodoard records in 936 (as the second report in that year) the death of ·Äúrex Rodulfus·Äù and his burial ·ÄúSenonis apud sanctam Columbam·Äù[94].¬â€  The¬â€ Historia Francorum Senonensis¬â€ records the death "XVIII Kal Feb" of "Rodulfo rege", specifying his burial "in basilica aanct√¶ Columb√¶"[95].¬â€  The necrology of Auxerre cathedral records the death 14 Jan of "Rodulphus rex"[96].¬â€
King Robert I & his second wife had one child:¬â€
3.¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ HUGUES¬â€ ([898]-Dourdan, Essonne 16 Jun 956, bur √©glise de l'Abbaye royale de Saint-Denis).¬â€  The¬â€ Historia Francorum Senonensis¬â€ names "Hugo Magnus" as son of "Robertus princeps [et]¬â€ sororem Herberti"[97].¬â€  He was installed as¬â€ HUGUES¬â€ "le Grand"¬â€ Duc des Francs¬â€ in 936.¬â€

¬â€

HERIBERT¬â€ [II], son of HERIBERT [I] Comte de Vermandois & his wife [Lietgardis] --- ([880]-23 Feb 943, bur Saint Quentin).¬â€  None of the sources so far consulted state explicitly that H√©ribert [II] and his sister Beatrix were the children of H√©ribert [I] but this looks probable.¬â€  He succeeded his father in [900/907] as¬â€ Comte¬â€ de Meaux, de Soissons et¬â€ de Vermandois.¬â€  Lay Abbot of St Cr√©pin and St M√©dard at Soissons.¬â€  Comte H√©ribert took part in the rebellion against Charles III ·Äúle Simple·Äù King of France in 922 and tricked the ex-king into capture after he fled following his defeat near Soissons in 923.¬â€  Flodoard records in 923 that "Heribertus comes" sent ·ÄúBernardum consobrinum suum·Äù with a delegation ·Äúad Karolum·Äù who was ·Äúin castello suo super Somnam apud Sanctum Quintinum·Äù, and who was detained ·Äúin...munitionem suam...Castellum Theoderici super Maternam fluvium·Äù[198].¬â€  H√©ribert consolidated his power by arranging for his young son to be made Archbishop of Reims.¬â€  Comte H√©ribert received P√©ronne from Raoul King of France in 924.¬â€  Together with forces of Arnoul I Count of Flanders, H√©ribert captured the Viking stronghold of Eu[199].¬â€  Following this he apparently forged an alliance with Comte Rollo in [927][200], leaving his son Eudes with Rollo as a hostage.¬â€  Comte H√©ribert unsuccessfully attempted to capture Laon in 927[201].¬â€  [Comte de Vienne]: Flodoard records that Ugo King of Italy gave "provintiam Viennensem" to H√©ribert Comte de Varmandois in 928, and that "Odonis filii sui [=Heriberto]" was appointed¬â€ vicecomes[202].¬â€  No primary source has yet been identified which describes H√©ribert as ·ÄúComte de Vienne·Äù or confirms whether he adopted the comital title.¬â€  Flodoard provides an insight into the continuing rivalries regarding Vienne when he records in 933 that it was granted to "Rodulfo regi" [Rudolf II King of Upper Burgundy, see the document BURGUNDY KINGS][203]. With help from Hugues "le Grand" [Capet], King Raoul subdued Vermandois and Comte H√©ribert made his submission to the king[204].¬â€  In 939. H√©ribert joined the alliance against Louis IV King of France led by Otto I "der Gro√üe" King of Germany, who raided Frankish territory and forced King Louis to renounce his claim to the throne of Lotharingia. ¬â€ Together with Hugues "le Grand" [Capet], H√©ribert besieged Reims, forcing the restoration of his son as archbishop, and also besieged King Louis at Laon.¬â€  Flodoard records the death of "Heribertus comes" in 943 and his burial at Saint-Quentin[205].¬â€  The necrology of Reims Cathedral records the death "VII Kal Mar" of "Heribertus comes"[206].¬â€  On his death in 943, his territories were divided between his sons by their maternal uncle Hugues "le Grand".¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€
m¬â€ (before 21 May 907) [ADELA], daughter of ROBERT Marquis en Neustrie, Comte de Paris [later ROBERT I King of France] & his first wife [Adela] --- (before 898-).¬â€  The Chronicle of Alberic de Trois-Fontaines refers to "comitis Heriberti gener·Ä¶Roberti" and in a later passage to the sister of "dux Hugo Cappatus" as the wife of "comitis Heriberti de Peroni, Campanie et Veromandie" but does not name her[207].¬â€  Her origin is confirmed by Flodoard naming "Hugo¬â€ dux cum nepotibus suis, Heriberti filiis" in 943[208].¬â€  Her birth date is estimated from the birth of her first child in [915].¬â€  Her name is deduced as follows.¬â€  The 21 May 907 donation of Rebais abbey to the church of Paris refers to "comitis Rotberti et Adele comitisse"[209].¬â€  Although this phrasing usually indicates husband and wife, Settipani suggests that the chronology of the life of King Robert's son Hugues (attested as Robert's son by his second wife B√©atrix) favours his birth, and therefore his father's second marriage, well before 907, which would mean "Adele" could not have been Robert's wife.¬â€  This reasoning appears based firstly on Hugues already being married in [914], and secondly on the probability of his having reached the age of majority when he was recognised as duke in 922.¬â€  The 907 document is explained as referring to Robert and his elder daughter.¬â€  The issue, however, is not beyond doubt, especially if the document in question was misdated.¬â€  Her marriage date assumes that this identification is correct.¬â€
Comte Héribert II & his wife had [eight] children:
1.¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ODO¬â€ [Eudes] ([915]-after 19 Jun 946).¬â€ ¬â€ Vicomte de Vienne: Flodoard records that "Odonis filii sui [=Heriberto]" was appointed¬â€ vicecomes¬â€ when Ugo King of Italy gave his father "provintiam Viennensem" in 928[210].¬â€  His father left him in [927] as a hostage with Rollo Comte [de Normandie].¬â€  Unlike his father, he swore allegiance to Louis IV "d'Outremer" King of the Franks in 938 and received the guardianship of the royal residence at Laon.¬â€  He occupied the town and county of Amiens, but was expelled in 944[211].¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€
2.¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ADELA¬â€ de Vermandois¬â€ ([915]-[Bruges 10 Oct] 960, bur Ghent, St Pieter).¬â€  The¬â€ Genealogica¬â€ Arnulfi Comitis¬â€ names "Adelam, domni Heriberti comitis filiam" as wife of "comes Arnulfus", specifying that she was "duorum Francorum regum, Odonis atque Rotberti, neptem"[212].¬â€  Flodoard refers to the wife of "Arnoul" as sister¬â€ of "Hugo¬â€ [de Vermandois Archbishop of Reims]"[213].¬â€  Her marriage was arranged to seal the alliance made in 934 between her father and her future husband[214].¬â€  "Arnulfus Flandrie comes et marchisus" granted use of property "Snellenghem in pago Flandrensi" to Saint-Pierre de Gand, for "uxore mea·Ä¶Adala atque·Ä¶filio meo Balduino et filia mea Lietgardis" and for deceased "Balduino genitore meo et Elstrudis genetrice mea atque Heeberto filio meo", by charter dated 10 Jul 953[215].¬â€  "Adhela comitissa" freed two serfs and granted them to the abbey of Saint-Pierre de Gand, for the soul of "fidelis nostri Amalrici", by charter dated 8 Sep 954, signed by "Balduini comitis·Ä¶Odacri advocati"[216].¬â€  The¬â€ Annales¬â€ Blandinienses¬â€ record the death in 960 of "Adala comitissa"[217].¬â€ ¬â€ m¬â€ (934) as his second wife,¬â€ ARNOUL I¬â€ "le Grand"¬â€ Count of Flanders, son of BAUDOUIN II "le Chauve" Count of Flanders & his wife √Ülfthryth of Wessex ([885/890]-murdered 27 Mar 964, bur Ghent, St Pieter).¬â€ ¬â€
3.¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ HERIBERT¬â€ [III] "le Vieux" ([910/26]-[983/early 985], bur Lagny).¬â€  Flodoard names "Heriberti¬â€ Adalberti¬â€ fratris" when recording his marriage, and in a later passage "nepotes Hugonis, Heribertus et Rotbertus"[218].¬â€  His date of birth has been estimated at [910/15] by Werner[219], whereas Settipani supports a later estimate of [925/26][220].¬â€  The former appears more consistent with H√©ribert's participation in his father's war from 938.¬â€  If the latter is correct, comte H√©ribert would have been more than 20 years younger than his wife, which seems unlikely.¬â€  There appears to be no basis for deciding between one or the other.¬â€  He is documented with his father between 938 and 942 in the latter's war against King Louis IV, submitting to the king with his father in 942.¬â€  Under the division of territories organised after his father's death in 943, H√©ribert became Comte d'Omois and received the fortress of Ch√¢teau-Thierry as well as the abbey of Saint-M√©dard, Soissons.¬â€  King Lothaire appointed him comte du palais (comte palatin).¬â€  He succeeded his brother Robert in 967 as Comte de Meaux et de Troyes.¬â€  His proposed death date range in [983/early 985] is estimated on the following basis.¬â€  A letter of Gerbert dated 983 records that "Heriberti¬â€ Trecassini et Oddonis comitis filii Tedbaldi" were enemies of "Adelbero¬â€ Remonis¬â€ archiepiscopus"[221].¬â€  However, a letter dated to Apr 985 names "Ottonis et Heriberti", while a letter dated to mid-985 records that "Ottonem, Heribertum" made peace with the archbishop[222].¬â€  Another letter of Gerbert dated to [late 986/early 987] records that "O et Heribertus comites" were part of the council of Emma Queen of France[223].¬â€  It is assumed that "Oddonis/Ottonem/O" all refer to the same person.¬â€  However, it is suggested that only the first letter applies to H√©ribert [III], the change to H√©ribert [V] (nephew and successor of H√©ribert [III], son of the latter's brother Robert) being indicated in the subsequent letters by "Heribertum" being named after "Ottonem" instead of before, which suggests that he was the junior of the two from Apr 985.¬â€  The Chronicle of Alberic de Trois-Fontaines records the burial of "comes Trecensis Heribertus II cognomento Vetulus" in "abbatiam Latiniaci"[224].¬â€ ¬â€ m¬â€ (951) as her second husband,¬â€ EADGIFU, widow of¬â€ CHARLES III¬â€ "le Simple"¬â€ King of the Franks, daughter of EDWARD I King of Wessex & his second wife √Ülfleda --- ([902/05][225]-26 Sep after 951, bur Abbaye de Saint-M√©dard de Soissons).¬â€  Flodoard records in 951 that ·ÄúOttogeba regina mater Ludowici regis·Äù married ·ÄúHeriberti...Adalberti fratris·Äù and that ·Äúrex Ludowicus iratus·Äù confiscated ·Äúabbatiam sanct√¶ Mari√¶...Lauduni·Äù from her and donated it to ·ÄúGerberg√¶ uxori su√¶·Äù[226].¬â€
4.¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ HUGUES¬â€ (920-Meaux 962).¬â€  Flodoard names "Hugone diacono Heriberti filio", when recording his installation as archbishop of Reims in 940[227].¬â€  His father engineered the grant by Raoul King of France of the temporal administration of the archbishopric of Reims to Hugues in 925.¬â€  The¬â€ Annales Remenses¬â€ record in 926 that, after the death of "Seulfo archipresule", "Hugo filius Heriberti comitis, adhuc quinquennis" was elected[228].¬â€  The appointment was confirmed by Pope John X, but the grant was withdrawn by the king in 932 after he besieged the city[229].¬â€  Hugues entered holy orders in 940: Flodoard records in 940 that ·ÄúWidone Suessonico pr√¶sule·Äù ordained ·ÄúHugo filius Heriberti Remis...presbiter·Äù[230].¬â€  His father, who had captured Reims in [Jun/Jul] 940, forced Hugues's restoration as¬â€ archbishop of Reims.¬â€  Besieged at Laon, King Louis IV was obliged to confirm Hugues's appointment as archbishop and also appointed Hugues as his Arch-Chancellor.¬â€  Hugues was expelled from Reims in 946 when the town was retaken by King Louis.¬â€  He was finally deprived of his archbishopric by the papal legate in 948: Flodoard records in 948 that ·Äúlitteras...ex nomine Agapiti pap√¶·Äù sent ·Äúad episcopos per clericum suum·Äù ordered ·ÄúHugoni·Äù to withdraw from ·ÄúRemense...episcopium·Äù[231].¬â€  Flodoard records in 949 that ·ÄúAgapitus papa·Äù held a synod ·Äúapud sanctum Petrum·Äù which confirmed ·Äúdampnationem Hugonis episcopi apud Ingulenheim·Äù and excommunicated him[232].¬â€  Flodoard records in 962 that ·ÄúHugoni·Äù requested reinstatement as archbishop of Reims after the death of Archbishop Artaud but that this was refused[233].¬â€  He died on returning from a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela[234].¬â€

The Chronicle of Alberic de Trois-Fontaines refers to "comitis Heriberti generဦRoberti" and in a later passage to the sister of "dux Hugo Cappatus" as the wife of "comitis Heriberti de Peroni, Campanie et Veromandie" but does not name her[82]. Her origin is confirmed by Flodoard naming "Hugo dux cum nepotibus suis, Heriberti filiis" in 943[83]. Her birth date is estimated from the birth of her first child in [915]. Her name is deduced as follows. The 21 May 907 donation of Rebais abbey to the church of Paris refers to "comitis Rotberti et Adele comitisse"[84]. Although this phrasing usually indicates husband and wife, Settipani suggests that the chronology of the life of King Robert's son Hugues (attested as Robert's son by his second wife Beatrix) favours his birth, and therefore his father's second marriage, well before 907, which would mean "Adele" could not have been Robert's wife. This reasoning appears based firstly on Hugues already being married in [914], and secondly on the probability of his having reached the age of majority when he was recognised as duke in 922. The 907 document is therefore explained as referring to Robert and his elder daughter. The issue, however, is not beyond doubt, especially if the document in question was misdated. m (before 21 May 907) HERIBERT II Comte de Vermandois, son of HERIBERT I Comte de Vermandois[-Carolingian] & his wife [Liedgardis] --- ([880]-23 Feb 943, bur Saint Quentin).
