Count Hermenegildo, the son of count Gutierre and his wife Elvira,[2] appears in medieval documentation starting in 869 ·Äî when with his father-in-law, Gatââ¥n, count in Astorga and El Bierzo, settled a dispute between the king of Asturias and bishop Mauro[3] ·Äî until his last appearance in May 912,[1][2] when he confirmed a donation made by his son-in-law, king Ordoâ±o II, to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. He was one of the most loyal vassals of King Alfonso III, who named him his mayordomo mayor[1] and compensated his efforts and services to the crown with many properties and tenencias.
Hermenegildo played an active role in military operations during the Reconquista. In 878, he defeated the Muslim troops who had attacked Oporto and then Coimbra,[4] repopulating these cities, as well as neighboring Braga, Viseu, and Lamego, with people from Galicia after expelling the Moors.[3][5] His holdings there would pass to his descendants and come to be called the County of Coimbra, which was retaken again in 987 by Almanzor and it was not until 1064 that the city was permanently reconquered by the Christian armies of Ferdinand I of León.
In 895, Hermenegildo defeated and captured the Galician noble Witiza who had taken up arms against the king of Asturias, taking him in chains before the monarch who compensated the count with many of the rebel's estates and tenencias.[6]

Called the Galician Cid, he participated in the reconquest of Tui (the old one, on the left bank of the Miâ±o, which was the royal seat of his ancestor, King Witiza), Braga (the old capital of Regnum Suevorum and the legal convent of Gallaecia Roman Bracarense) and reconquered Coimbra and preserved it against the Islamist counterattack. It is said that here he recovered the royal treasure of Witiza. Restorer of the ancestral landscape of Tudesia, he was Count of Portugal (Oporto) and Tui, and after quelling the uprising of Duke Witiza (not to be confused with the homonymous king) he appropriated their lands in the Arousa estuary. Thus he was recognized by Alfonso of Asturias as Duke of Galicia, for being the most powerful lord of that kingdom. For this same reason, he was appointed mayordomo (maior domus) of the Asturian court. Setting his stately court in Tui, his sons were counts in Coimbra and Celanova, with some kind of vassal dependence on their father. Through these assignments, Tudesia was defended by two advanced squares that intercepted any Muslim advance, while the access from the Leonese moor was covered by his brother Osorio, in charge of the Astorga house.
This power materializes in the dynastic marriage between the children of Alfonso and Hermenegildo.
Hermenegildo Gutiâ©rrez (or Menendo or Mendo) was a prominent figure of the Galician nobility of the 9th century. It had extensive possessions in present-day Galicia and northern Portugal. It belonged to the Curia Regia in the court of Alfonso III the Great. He held the highest position in it, royal steward. He was count of Porto and conqueror of Coimbra in 876.
Hermenegildo Guterres
He was the son of Guterre Ermegildes (810 - 875), Count of Coimbra and Elvira Anzures. He married about the year 860 with Ermesinda Gatones de Vierzo (? - 840), daughter of Gaton Ramires Conde de Vierzo and Egilona - probably daughter of King Ramiro I of Asturias (800 - February 1, 850), of whom he had:
Gudilona Mendes (862 -?) Married Lucídio Vimaranes.
Arias Mendes de Coimbra or Arias Mendes (911-924) Count of Emínio, married Ermesenda Gondesendes, daughter of Gondesendo Eris and therefore granddaughter of Ero Fernandes de Lugo.
Elvira Mendes (864 - October 921) was the first wife of the king of Galicia, Ordonho II of Galicia and Leâ£o (860 - 924).
Guterre Mendes (880 - 933) Count who ruled six Conmissa in Galicia by concession of King D. Afonso IV de Leâ£o. He married Ilduara Eriz (916 - 958), daughter of Ero Fernandes de Lugo, count of Lugo and Ausenda or Elvira .
Inderquina Mendes Pala (? - 947) married Gondesendo Eriz, son of Ero Fernandes de Lugo.
Aldonâßa Mendes (882-942) married to Guterre Ozores de Coimbra (c. 880 -?). They were the parents of Osââ¥rio Guterres ·ÄúO conde Santo·Äù and Ausenda Guterres I who was the first wife of his cousin Ramiro II de Leâ£o (905 - 5 de Janeiro
950 or 951) and was later repudiated.

Even when Tude fell, Flavio Gautier (Gutierre) Elmegildez (or Liótez) had to stay in Alta Tudesia (Ourense, Sil lands). He accompanied Count Gatón Ramirez - son of King Ramiro of Asturias and Count of Bierzo - in the repopulation of Astorga. This repopulation is essential to avoid the Muslim attacks against the Asturian kingdom, which covered its southern flank by the Cantabrian mountain range, when they were not harassing the source from Al Quila and the Basque depression, they were advancing from the west on Galicia, either by maritime locale, or by through the Bierzo. The repopulation of Astorga closes this last path, forcing the enemy to forcibly use the Via de Tuy, and defends not only Asturias but also all of Galicia. Ourense, due to its landscape, was never an option for Islamist advances.
His three sons -Osorio, Aloito and Elmegildo- will be powerful lords, and the latter -called the Galician Cid, protagonist of the most glorious pages of the Galician-Portuguese reconquest.
First member of line 3 of ascendants of Mr. Afonso Henriques
Ricohombre of Alfonso II the Chaste - The Ricohombres, more than powerful in property and vassals, were of great lineage, privilege and authority with the kings; they ended when the Greats were created. He opposed the payment of the tribute of the hundred maidens, which Mauregato made to the Muslims as a sign of vassalage, to obtain their help in obtaining the throne. He was in the battle of Clavijo, which earned him to be Canon of León.
