JOHN de Verdun, son of THEOBALD Butler [Le Botiller] & his second wife Rohese de Verdun of Alton, Staffordshire ([1226]-before 17 Oct 1274).¬â€  He adopted his mother·Äôs family name Verdun.¬â€  The Chronicle of Croxden records the death ·ÄúIV Id Feb·Äù 1248 of ·Äúdomina Roysia de Verdun fundatrix abbati√¶ de Crokesden·Äù and the succession of ·Äúdominus Johannes de Verdun filius eius·Äù[258].¬â€  "John de Verdun made a fine with the king of 1,300 marks to have seisin of the lands both in England and Ireland which had belonged to Rohesia de Verdun his mother and whose heir he is" by charter dated 3 May 1247[259].¬â€  Inquisitions after a writ dated 17 Oct "2 Edw I" following the death of "John de Verdun" name ·ÄúTheobald his son is his next heir and of full age...aged 22 and more·Äù[260].¬â€  The Chronicle of Croxden records the death ·ÄúXII Kal Nov·Äù 1278 of ·Äúdominus Johannes de Verdun validus patronus domus hujus·Äù and the succession of ·Äúdominus Theobaldus filius eius·Äù[261].¬â€  The inquisitions demonstrate that this date is incorrect.¬â€
m firstly (before 14 May 1244) MARGERY de Lacy, daughter of GILBERT de Lacy of Ewyas Lacy, Herefordshire & his wife Isabel Bigod of the Earls of Norfolk (-before 1256).¬â€  The Chronicle of Tintern Abbey, Monmouthshire names "Margeria et Matilda" as the daughters and co-heiresses of "Gilberto de Lacy" and his wife, adding that Margery married "Johanni de Verdon" (and lists three generations of their descendants)[262].¬â€  A manuscript which narrates the descents of the founders of Lanthony Abbey names ·ÄúMargeria, uxor Johannis de Verdon·Äù as daughter and heiress of ·ÄúGilbertus de Lacy·Äù, son of ·ÄúWalterus de Lacy·Äù, and also lists their descendants[263].¬â€  A charter dated 14 May 1244 restored to "John de Verdun and Margaret his wife, granddaughter and one of the heirs of Walter de Lascy, and to Peter de Geneve and Matilda his wife, granddaughter and another of Walter·Äôs heirs, all the lands in Meath whereof Walter was seised at his death"[264].¬â€
m secondly (before 1267) ELEANOR, daughter of --- (-after 10 Jun 1278).¬â€  The Complete Peerage indicates that ·Äúa seal, said to be hers, bears the Bohun and Verdun arms·Äù, suggesting that she ·Äúmay have been a Bohun·Äù and adding that ·Äúthe name of her son Humphrey may be significant·Äù[265].¬â€  If this suggested family origin is correct, it is unlikely that Eleanor was the daughter of Humphrey [VI] de Bohun Earl of Hereford & Essex who is already recorded with a daughter of that name.¬â€  A document dated ·Äúon Wednesday after St. Katherine, 4 Edward·Äù records an agreement between ·ÄúLady Eleanor de Verdun·Äù, widow of ·ÄúSir John de Verdun·Äù, and ·ÄúSir Theobald de Verdun·Äù concerning her dower[266].¬â€  A document dated 10 Jun 1278 refers to attorneys ·Äúof Eleanor late the wife of John de Verdun·Äù in a suit she brought at Dublin concerning her dower in Ireland[267].¬â€
John & his first wife had three children:¬â€
1.¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€  NICHOLAS de Verdun (-killed 1271).¬â€  The Annals of Ulster record in 1269 that "the son of John de Verdon was killed by Walter de Burgh·Äù[268].¬â€  The date of Nicholas·Äôs death is corrected in two other sources.¬â€  The Annals of the Four Masters record in 1271 that ·ÄúNicholas the son of John Verdun Lord of Oriel was slain by Geoffry O·ÄôFarrell·Äù[269].¬â€  James Grace·Äôs Annales Hiberni√¶ (probably dated to [1537/39]) record in 1271 that ·ÄúNicolaus de Verdon et Johannes frater eius·Äù were killed[270].¬â€
2.¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€  JOHN de Verdun (-killed 1271).¬â€  James Grace·Äôs Annales Hiberni√¶ (probably dated to [1537/39]) record in 1271 that ·ÄúNicolaus de Verdon et Johannes frater eius·Äù were killed[271].¬â€
3.¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€  THEOBALD [I] de Verdun ([1248]-Alton 24 Aug 1309, bur Croxden).¬â€  The Chronicle of Croxden records the death ·ÄúXII Kal Nov·Äù 1278 of ·Äúdominus Johannes de Verdun validus patronus domus hujus·Äù and the succession of ·Äúdominus Theobaldus filius eius·Äù[272].¬â€  He was summoned to Parliament in 1295 whereby he is held to have become Lord Verdun.¬â€  The Chronicle of Croxden records the death ·Äúdie dominica in festo Bartholomei apostoli apud Alveton·Äù 1309 of ·Äúdominus T. de Verdun patronus noster·Äù and his burial ·Äúapud Crokesden...III Id Oct·Äù[273].¬â€  Inquisitions following a writ dated 28 Aug "3 Edw II" after the death of "Theobald de Verdun alias de Verdoun, de Verdun, the elder·Äù name ·ÄúTheobald his son aged 28 [...30...24 and more...22 and more...aged 31 at the feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Mary last] is his next heir·Äù, and noting ·ÄúByseley·Äù Gloucestershire ·Äúheld in free marriage of the earl of Hereford·Äù[274].¬â€  No document has been identified which confirms that Bisley was the same property as ·Äúthe tenements·Äù referred to in the 1306 claim (see below) but this appears likely.¬â€  m [firstly] (before 6 Nov 1276) MARGERY, daughter of ---.¬â€  Letters were issued for ·ÄúMargery wife of Theobald de Verdun·Äù nominating two attorneys for her ·Äúfor a year after Martinmas·Äù (from the context of the calendar suggesting that she was going ·Äúbeyond seas·Äù), dated 6 Nov 1276[275].¬â€  If the calendar summary correctly reflects the original document (not yet consulted), ·Äúbeyond seas·Äù would probably have meant Ireland considering the Verdun family·Äôs connections.¬â€  The question arises whether this Margery was the same person as Margery de Bohun, who is named below as Theobald [I]·Äôs possible second wife.¬â€  The normal reading of the 1306 document summarised below indicates a chronology which excludes Margery being the same person as Theobald·Äôs wife who was named in 1276.¬â€  While that document is poorly written, confusing and self-contradictory as explained below, there are insufficient indications from two other available sources to suggest that it should be ignored or reinterpreted.¬â€  Firstly, Theobald [I]·Äôs inquisitions suggest that he held Bisley in Gloucestershire from his Bohun wife but include no information which helps with the chronology of his marriage(s).¬â€  Secondly, Theobald [II]·Äôs inquisitions did not include Bisley, which suggests that he did not inherit the property (which would have been the case if Margery de Bohun was not his mother), although he could have sold or otherwise disposed of it after inheriting.¬â€  The issue is not without doubt, but these difficulties need to be highlighted.¬â€  [m secondly [as her second husband,] MARGERY de Bohun, [widow of ROBERT de W---,] daughter of [HUMPHREY [VII] de Bohun Earl of Hereford & Essex & his wife Mathilde de Fiennes] ([1276/80]-after 1306).¬â€  There is doubt about the identity of this person.¬â€  Her parentage and two marriages are indicated by the following document which suggests that Margery married firstly ·ÄúRobert de W---·Äú and secondly ·ÄúTheobald de Verdun·Äù.¬â€  In connection with a lawsuit in Easter Term 1306, an edited extract states that ·ÄúTheobald de Verdun·Äù (·ÄúTebaud de Verdone·Äù) vouched to the Earl of Hereford that his father Humphrey (·Äúun Umfrey sun pere·Äù) had given ·Äúthe tenements [unspecified] demanded to Robert de W. [unidentified] in frank-marriage with Margery his daughter·Äù (·Äúles tenements demaundez a Robert de W. en franc-mariage ove Margerie sa fille·Äù)[276].¬â€  This edited extract is difficult to understand, particularly because the parties to the lawsuit, the property in question, and the precise nature of the claim are not specified.¬â€  Logically, the ·ÄúEarl of Hereford·Äù should have been the earl then living [Humphrey [VIII] de Bohun], particularly because the extract also includes a reply on the earl·Äôs behalf aiming to indicate that the gift was void by stating that ·Äúfor fifteen years before this charter was made Humphrey our father had nothing in the tenements·Äù.¬â€  If that is correct, the earl·Äôs father was Humphrey [VII] de Bohun, who was born in [1249] and died in 1298.¬â€  In that case, Margery could not have been born before [1276/80] and, assuming that she married Theobald [I] de Verdun as her second husband, could not have been the same person as Theobald·Äôs wife Margery who is named in 1276.¬â€  The conclusion of the lawsuit appears to have been (according to the edited extract) that the deed was admitted and therefore Theobald and Margery ·Äúwere seised [of the tenements] on the day of the making thereof and Robert was never seised·Äù.¬â€  This appears to make little sense if the edited extract correctly reflects the ·Äòvoucher·Äô.¬â€  Another problem is the identity of ·ÄúTebaud de Verdone·Äù.¬â€  Logic suggests that he was Theobald [I], who was then head of the family.¬â€  If that is correct, the property subject of the 1306 lawsuit was probably Bisley, Gloucestershire, noted in the inquisitions following his death as ·Äúheld in free marriage of the earl of Hereford·Äù (see above).¬â€  However, Bisley was not mentioned in the 1316 inquisitions following the death of Theobald [II] de Verdun, son of Theobald [I].¬â€  This omission could support the hypothesis of Theobald [I]·Äôs second marriage, as Theobald [II] would not have inherited the property if Margery de Bohun was not his mother, unless he sold or otherwise disposed of it between 1309 and 1316.]¬â€  Theobald & his [first] wife had children:¬â€
a)¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€  JOHN de Verdun (-Ireland 13 Jun 1297).¬â€  The Chronicle of Croxden records the death ·ÄúId Jun·Äù 1297 ·Äúin Hibernia·Äù of ·ÄúJohannes de Verdun primogenitus domini Theobaldi·Äù[277].¬â€
