Camp near Gordonsville, VA
May 4, 1864
Dear Zilpha,
I again drop you a few lines to let you know that I am tolerable well. I hope this will come safe to hand and find you all well. I got yours and Thomas's letters and was glad to hear from you all.
You stated in them that you bought Patrick. He will suit you very well I know, but I don't think it would be advisable to be in debt for him. If I was there, perhaps I could manage to pay for him by selling Henry. That I don't want to do. There is nothing made by trading young stock for old stock. My advice would be to keep out of debt. If you don't when this war is over, it will take Henry and Patrick to pay for one of them, and then it won't do it. Money is only worth two dollars and a half in a five dollar bill. This money will soon all be killed. Then property will sell for almost nothing.
If you have not started my pants, don't send them, for I can draw clothing from the government now. I will let you know when I want anything. I get bread enough to do now, meat once a day.
This part of the world is out of everything.
We are on the way to Manassas. We stopped today to rest. It is thought that there will be a big fight at that place in a short time. I have nothing good to write you. I would be gladdest in the world to see you all once more.
Tell Mr. Moor I have wrote him two letters since he wrote to me. I want him to write me and give me all the news.
If I never return home, I want you to educate the children the very best you can and teach them good from evil.
Write soon, Direct your letter to Gordonsville, VA., First Regiment, Co. F, Jenkins Brigade, Longstreet's Corps. [this may refer to the Palmetto Sharp Shooters, Jenkin's Regiment, 1st Palmetto Sharp Shooters. - no CMSR found for him in 1st Orrs or Palmetto SS]
I come to close. I remain your husband until death.
W. W. Welborn
