Joseph and Tacy sailed from Westerly in the fall of 1742, spent the winter on Long Island and arrived at the Manasquan River, NJ in the spring of 1743.lonial Ancestry" by Margaret Parks Ewing, 1915- of the oft-repeated claim that Jonathan’s wife was Judith Potter: “[Jonathan Rogers]. . . married Nov. 24, 1711, Judith Potter. ‘She died soon afterwards [his death in 1777], before his will was proved.’ The fact that Jonathan married a Judith Potter has been affirmed by many descendants and others, but after diligent search her parentage has not been discovered.”in trying to connect her with any known Potter family. C.E. Potter’s 1888 "Genealogies of the Potter Families" is quite comprehensive but offers no solution, or even likely candidates for the parents of a Judith Potter. I have likewise found no Judith Potter in Arnold and other Rhode Island sources.her SDBs. I have not found any Potters this early among the Newport or Westerly SDB churches. (Jonathan Rogers was definitely SDB; his father, Jonathan, adhered to an ‘orthodox’ practice of the faith, while his brothers veered off into their idiosyncratic doctrines—forming the Rogerene sect.)is confused with her daughter Judith Rogers, who married Thomas Potter. Register, vol. 11, pp. 151-2. It names the children of John, though leaving the first names of most of his daughters blank, the original copy apparently illegible. On the other hand, "The Maxson family; Descendants of John Maxson and wife Mary Mosher" (Walter LeRoy Brown, 1954) lists Elder John’s children and gives the marriages for each—except for daughter Judith. If we read the probate record together with the Maxson genealogy, all the children are accounted for (Mary and Joseph having died young). That is, in the probate record there is only one unaccounted son-in-law—Jonathan Rogers—and he is matched with the only daughter without a marriage listed in the Maxson genealogy—Judith. The probate abstract reads as follows, with the information from the Maxson genealogy supplied in brackets:eceased [both Bethia and Joseph having died in 1747], leaving son Joseph Maxson of Middletown, East Jersey & other unnamed children [they had 3 daughters in addition to Joseph] who are grandchildren of John Maxson, late of Westerly deceased. Max Maxson late of Westerly deceased also left daughters: [Hannah] Maxson wife of John Maxson of Westerly, yeoman; Elizabeth Davis wife of John Davis; [Susan] Reynolds, wife of Zacheus Reynolds of Westerly; [Dorothy] Burdick, wife of Thomas Burdick of Westerly; [Avis] Burdick, wife of Samuel Hobart [Hubbard] Burdick of Stonington, CT & [Judith] Rogers, wife of Jonathan Rogers of New London, CT.”dson of James. As mentioned, his father, alone among his siblings remained a Seventh Day Baptist. Nor do I see where Judith’s husband could be confused with any other of the grandsons of James Rogers of New London. While I would still like to see some sort of marriage record—if anything to verify the 24 November 1711 date—the record above appears to be ample proof that Jonathan Rogers married Judith Maxson, not Potter. 19 January 1687/88 Judith Clarke, d. of Joseph Clarke, Jr. and Bethia Hubbard.
