1. John, of whom hereafter.
2. Sir Roger Wentworth, who married Margery, relict of John Lord de Roos (who died without issue, 22 March, 1421-2). She was daughter and heir of Philip le Despencer, of Nettlestead,* County Suffolk, by Elizabeth his wife, daughter and heir of Sir Robert Tiptoft, of Nettlestead, and relict of William Scrope, Earl of Wiltshire. Sir Roger settled at Nettlestead, and died before his wife. Lady Margery died 20 April 1478. Her Will was dated 30 August, 1477, and proved 28 May 1478. He was settled at Nettlestead, and became ancestor of the Barons Wentworth of Nettlestead and the Earl of Cleveland. His direct line terminated in Lady Anne Wentworth, who married John, Lord Lovelace. He was also the ancestor of the Wentworths of Gosfield, in the county of Essex, members of which family were scattered over the kingdom, especially in the counties of Bucks, Oxford, and Dorset. From Lady Anne Wentworth, who married John, Lord Lovelace, was descended Anna Isabel (born 1794, and died 16 May, 1860), daughter and heir of Sir Ralph Milbanke and grand daughter of Sir Edward Noel, Baronet, Lord Wentworth. She married, in 1815, the celebrated poet, Lord Byron, whose name was George Gordon, and left an only child, Ada, who married Earl Lovelace, and died, in 1852, leaving children.

Pg.26
XIII. John13 Wentworth, Esq., of North Elmsall, who married Agnes, sister and coheir of Sir William Dronsfield, of West Bretton, in Yorkshire, and was living in 1413. He had four sons, viz.--1. John14, of whom hereafter., 2. Roger14, of whom hereafter., 3. Thomas14, who settled at Doncaster, and whose Will is dated 9 March 1449-50., 4. Richard14, of Bretton, of whom hereafter.
The second son
(14) Sir Roger14 Wentworth, Kt., married, in June 1423, Margery, daughter and heir of Sir Philip le Despenser, Kt., of Nettlested, co. Suffolk, and relict of John, Lord de Roos (who
Pg.27
died without issue, 22 March 1421-2). He settled at Nettlested, where he died 21 October 1452. She survived him, and died 20 April 1478. They had issue as follows:-- 1. Philip15, of whom hereafter., 2. Henry15, of whom hereafter., 3. Thomas15, who became rector of Barrow, co. Suffolk, 16 July 1474, on the presentation of his mother, whose executor he became. His successor was presented 9 May 1501, probably shortly after his death., 4. Elizabeth15, who married Sir John Calthorpe, Kt., 5. Margaret15, who married Sir William Hopton, Kt., 6 Agnes15, who married Sir Robert Constable, Kt., of Flamborough, co. York, High Sheriff of Yorkshire in 1480, who died in 1488.
The second son
(15) Henry15 Wentworth, of Codham Hall, in Wethersfield, co Essex, married, first Elizabeth, daughter and sole heir of Henry Howard, second son of Sir John Howard; and, secondly, Jane, daughter and heir of Henry Fitz Simon. She survived her husband and remarried Sir Richard Fitz Lewes, Kt., of West Horndon, co. Essex, whose Will she proved 24 November 1529. By his second wife Henry Wentworth had issue only one son, Nicholas, ancestor of the Wentworths of counties Oxford, Bucks, Northampton, Warwick, and Lincoln, of whom hereafter. The said Henry Wentworth died 22 March 1482-3, having had issue by his first wife as follows:-- 1. Roger16, of whom hereafter., 2. Henry16, whose Will, dated 16 November 1610, was proved 6 February following. He was evidently unmarried, and was buried in the chancel of St. Olave, in the Old Jewry, London., 3. Thomas16, who proved his brother Henry's Will, but of whom nothing further is known., 4. William 16, who also proved his brother Henry's Will in 1510-11. He had a license, 15 April 1524, being then of Wethersfield, to marry Margaret Bendish, of Steeple Bumstead, co. Essex, but no later trace of him has been discovered., 5. Robert16, who was living in 1539-40., 6. Margery16, who married, before 1483, Sir William Waldegrave, Knight of the Bath, who died 30 January 1527-8, and was buried at Bures, in Suffolk. She survived him, and was also buried at Bures, 7 May 1540.,
Pg.28
7. Margaret16, who is said to have married, first, William Ashfield; and secondly, Edward Wingfield., 8. Elizabeth16, who married, first, William Abington, Esq., of Horseheath, co. Cambridge, who was killed at the battle of Bosworth Field, 22 August 1485; secondly, William Cheney, Esq.; and thirdly, Sir Ralph Chamberlain, Kt. Her Will, dated 19 May 1527, was proved 23 November 1528., 9. Mary16, who married, first, Thomas Tymperley, Esq., who died in 1505; secondly, Edward Harvey, Esq.; and thirdly, —— Paulet, Esq.
Before proceeding with the main line, we give the descendants of the son by the second wife, just mentioned, viz.—
(16) Nicholas16 Wentworth, who became Sir Nicholas16, being knighted by King Henry VIII in person during his expedition to Boulogne, in August 1544. .... His Will, dated 7 February 1551-2, was proved 24 June 1557, and he probably died not long before the latter date. He married, before 1525, Jane, daughter of John Josselyn, Esq., of Newhall-Josselyn, co. Essex, and of Sabridgeworth, co. Herts, and sister of Sir Thomas Josselyn, Kt. She survived him, and was buried at Burnham, co. Bucks, 26 August 1659. Their issue as follows: .... etc.
Pg.34

She died 28 August 1534, and was buried at Gosfield. They had issue as follows: .... etc.
Pg.39
We now return to the eldest son of Sir Roger14 Wentworth and Margery (le Despenser), viz.—
(15) Sir Philip Wentworth, Kt., of Nettlested, co Suffolk, who was born in 1424. He was attainted for some political offence in 1461, and died 18 May 1464. He married Mary, daughter of John, seventh Lord Clifford, of Westmoreland, by his wife Lady Elizabeth Percy, daughter of Henry, first Earl of Northumberland (the famous Hotspur). By her he had issue, besides a daughter Margaret, who married Sir Thomas Cotton, Kt., of Landwade, co. Cambridge (who died 30 Jul 1499), an only son * (16) Sir Henry16 Wentworth, .... etc.

The sons of Roger Wentworth and Lady Roos were three, viz., Sir Philip Wentworth, the narrative of whose career follows; Henry Wentworth of Codham Hall, Essex, who has his place in the account of the Gosfield house of Wentworth; and Thomas the priest. The latter was presented by his mother, 16 July 1474, to the rectory of Barrow, Suffolk; and by his nephew Sir Henry to Little Blakenham rectory, 15 February 1492; he seems to have died in 1501, as in that year the next presentations to both rectories occurred. There is a brass in Duxford Church, Cambridgeshire, to "Thomas Wyntworth," vicar, who died 21 September 1489;¹ but only through impugning the accuracy of the above dates can this vicar be supposed to have been the son of Roger Wentworth and Lady Roos. They had also three daughters whose marriages will be seen by reference to the Pedigree.
.... etc.
