1870. This picture was taken when Deborah E. Stockdale Briggs was 44 years old. Ma Briggs, in an album, years later, referred to her as "Mother McCree".
Deborah Stockdale is shown as "D. E. Briggs" in the US Census of 1880. Inasmuch as some of her descendents in the family of George Ellsworth Briggs, her youngest son, carry the names of Ellsworth and Stockdale, it is assumed her middle name was "Ellsworth", but there is no real proof of this. It could be Elizabeth just as well as that name is common in her family.
In the census of 1860, recorded on 10 August 1860, she is shown as being 33, three years younger than her husband, William H. Briggs. In the census of 1850, recorded on 9 September 1850, she is shown as being 24, two years younger than her husband, William. It is thus assumed her birthday was between 10 August and 9 September, which seems to be in conflict with the specific date of 14 Feb.
Following is the text of her obituary as printed in the Pulpit Herald, a religious newspaper:
"Fourth Church Pittsburgh
"The Fourth Christian church has lost a most valuable member by death.
"Mrs. Deborah E. Briggs, was born February 14, 1826, at Calcutta, Ohio, and died Tuesday morning Jan 7, 1902, aged nearly 76 years. She became a christian at the early age of 16, and lived a faithful follower of Jesus, her Saviour, for sixty years. The last four years, but one, she made her home with her son, Joseph A. Briggs, of Philadelphia and attended the Third church, being a member of the pastor's Bible Class. The last year was spent in Pittsburg with her son Geo. E. Briggs, and her membership was with the Fourth Christian church. She was married to Wm. H. Briggs, May 24, '46, by Isaac Errett. Six children were born to her, 4 of whom are now living.
"She was a devoted christian mother, and steadfast disciple of Christ for over half a century.
"The funeral service was held at Beaver, PA., where the writer was assisted by Brother Fields, the pastor at Beaver preached the discourse to a large concourse of family and friends from many points in Beaver and adjourning counties.
"After the services at the church, the body was placed in the beautiful cemetery in Beaver, to await the Master's call to the church on high.
"'Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates to the city.'
"-Mahlon H. Wilson."
Per the obiturary data, above,at the time of Deborah's death (1902), there were still four of her children living (Joseph, Elizabeth, Flora Belle, and George).
