BIRTH:His birth date is estimated. A picture published June 1995, Vol. VIII, No. 2, "The Genealogist," the official journal of the Australian Institute of Genealogical Studies, gives his birth date as circa 1760, Nottingham, Eng.
DEATH:"The Genealogist," see above. It states he was buried in Ockbrook, Derby, which is the same as data already gathered.
HISTORY:From the book, Barbers of the Peak, p. 336 (for more see notes under Sir Francis Guybon Atherstone): It is from Hugh Atherstone that the family is descended. He married Ann Green and had a family of fifteen, but many of them died in (XXXXX@XXXX.XXX) Hugh was a cloth dyer and they lived in Brewhouse Yard, Nottingham. They were wealthy, well-respected citizens, and are recorded in the "Notabilities of Nottingham." The Atherstones belonged to the Moravian fraternity--there is a Moravian settlement at Ockbrook in Derbyshire quite close to Nottingham. The graves of William and Hugh Atherstone at Ockbrook were seen by the writer (I. M.-B.) in 1926. The cemetery is very simple, for there are no ornate tombstones and the whole area consists of a green lawn on which are placed in rows slate slabs carved with the names and dates of the departed. @Hugh Atherstone was the father of Mary Atherstone, who married Thomas Barber the portrait-painter. They are the ancestors of all the Hilton-Barbers and Mitford-Barbertons in Africa, and Hilton Barber of Hales Owen, Cradock, also married an Atherstone, so this branch of the family is doubly related to the Atherstones. Thomas Barber painted portraits of Hugh Atherstone and his wife Ann (nee Green), and these are at present in the possession of Dr. Harold Atherstone of Port Alfred. The Hilton-Barbers and the Mitford-Barbertons also have copies. @Hugh Atherstone's eldest son, also named Hugh, had a daughter Mary. She married Capt. Edward Damant and they came out with the 1820 Settlers. A fine portrait of this lady was painted by Thomas Barber (he was her uncle) and is now in the possession of Edward Damant of Durban. The family names of de Gray, Sancroft, and Castell all come the Damant side of the family. @All the Atherstones in South Africa are descendants of Dr. John Atherstone, one of the fifteen children of old Hugh and and Ann. He married Elizabeth Damant and they came out with the 1820 Settlers. @Their eldest son was the famous Dr. William Guybon Atherstone, M.D., M.L.C., F.G.S., F.R.C.S., best known of all the Atherstones. He lived in Grahamstown and was the orginator of the Botanical Gardens there and the Albany Museum. Highly accomplished in many branches of science and art, he was a geologist, botanist, artist, and musician.
