Anna Ivanova claimed rule of the Baltic nation of Courland in 1711 when her husband, Frederick Duke of Courland died.
When Peter II of Russia died in 1730, Anna Ivanova, Duchess of Courland was invited to become Empress of Russia, the officials hoping for a weak ruler whom they could control. She was given limited authority, with her advisor Ernst Johann Biron (1690-1772). She then overthrew the limitations. She was considered one of the strong German influences in Russia. She died in 1740 and was succeeded by her cousin, Elizabeth in 1741.
