The family possibly originated from Heek, a town in Western Germany, perhaps fleeing from the religious wars, and settled in Delden, Overijssel, Netherlands. HENDRIK Laurens(zn) was probably not born in Delden, but lived there almost all his life. His son HERMAN and grandsons, HENDRIK (our ancestor), Jan and Gerrit Laurens, took the name 'van Heek' as their surname. HENDRIK Laurens had four children: Arend Laurens aka Heeckes; Laurens Hendriks; HERMAN Laurens (van Heek) our ancestor; Jan Hendriksen. HENDRIK's wife's surname became a family given name (Helmich).
The family went into the hospitality business and established an inn and brewery in the City of Delden. Unfortunately, in 1655 an enormous fire almost wiped out the whole town. 120 Buildings were destroyed among which was our forefather’s establishment. The ‘Oude Kerk’ (Old Church) was one of the very few buildings that survived the fire and still stands to this day. HENDRIK did not stay in the same location, but decided to rebuild a bigger and more spacious place on the road to Goor just outside the ‘Goorsche Poort’ (i.e. the gate on the road to Goor a town about seven miles southwest of Delden). He did this for a specific reason. If travelers arrived after the gate closed, they could still find accommodations. If they wished to depart early in the morning, they did not have to wait for the gate to open. He named his establishment ‘Den Engel’ (The Angel). It was a double building with two doors, which opened on the stables for cows and horses, the family’s animals as well as those of guests. Behind these were the living quarters and behind these stood the brewery. In those days it was customary for innkeepers to brew their own beer.
The place is still there and is now called ‘Het Witte Paard’ (The White Horse). My son Andrew and I visited it in 2010. We were driven there by Cousin Johnny Lammers van Toorenburg and his partner, with whom we were staying in Enschede. They also took us to Ruurlo, where the story of Family Munch got its start in The Netherlands.
The successive proprietors, all our direct ancestors, of ‘Den Engel’ (The Angel)were:
HENDRIK Laurens(zn) 1580-1657
HERMAN Laurens (van Heek) 1635-1693
HENDRIK van Heek 1666-1743
HERMANNUS van Heek 1696-1768
FREDERIK van Heek 1741-1793
HERBERTUS van Heek 1783-1862
JAN HENDRIK van Heek 1819-1863. He was the father of Papa's grandmother GEZIENA van Heek (1854-1935), who married Papa’s grandfather FREDERIK WILLEM Münch (1850-1923).
The above information comes almost all from the treasure trove sent to me by 2nd Cousin Cornelis Pieter (Kees) Tempelaar, whom I virtually met via a genealogical record match. My grandfather LODEWIJK KAREL PHILIPPUS Münch (1879-1943) and his grandmother Geertruida Eliza Constantina Tempelaar-Münch (1886-1967) were siblings.
