Allan was born at home, on the corner of Stokdyk-Ingelse Road and what is now called the Frontage Road, east of burg. His father, Harry, rented land from the DeWitt family across the street. There he grew potatoes, and white beans amoung other things. The white beans were harvested in the fall, and then the family spent time shelling them after they were well-dried. Then Harry would take the white beans to Prange's in Sheboygan to sell. Rather than paying him in cash, he was given "due bills" which could be traded for merchandise at Prange's. When Allan was 9 years old, his family moved to a farm about 4 miles west of burg on County Road KW, where they raised pigs and had dairy cattle. Harry, and his wife, Susie, lived on this farm until they shortly before they each died, Harry at Rocky Knoll in 1976, and Susie at Heritage Nursing Home in 1982. Their son, Ray, continued to live there until about 1997, when he sold the house and moved to an apartment in burg.
Allan farmed with his father until he got married in 1948 to Marian Debbink. He went to work for Edgar Bruggink, on his farm just south of Cedar Grove. At that point, Harry sold his farm horses and pigs, and bought his first tractor. In 1958, Allan borrowed money from Herbert Droppers to purchase a farm about a mile south of his father's farm on County Road KW. There he raised turkeys for several years. By 1961, he was dairy farming with his father and brother Ray. The dairy cattle were sold in 1988, but Allan and Ray continued growing crops until 1996 or 1997.
