Family story is (according to the Diepenhorst Family Book at Herrick Public Library) they took 5 of their 6 children -- leaving behind the oldest with his grandparents. Thinking, like many did, that they would have enough money to make a return trip in a few years. They had a sad experience in that their small daughter, Maaike, (she was probably not listed on the ship records as she was too young to be a paying passenger) died on the boat and was buried at sea. Hermanus did return to the Netherlands, several years later, but their eldest son had grown too old to want to leave his friends and so the children born to them in America never saw their oldest brother. They settled in an area North of Holland Michigan that was called Noordeloos. Hermanus Diepenhorst and William Verhey built the Christian Reformed Church in 1874. This building was seriously considered for removal to the campus of Calvin College, but instead, was torn down in 1979 and a new church building was constructed.
