[Harrison F. Orvis.FTW] (copied from notes of Effie M. Williams Sowers)
"When Clarence was about three years of age, his father, William, died, suffering from chronic dysentery contracted during the Civil War. His mother was compelled to work to support her two sons, the eldest taken by his uncle to live and Clarence taken by a neighbor, William Foster and wife. He attended the "Sugar Creek" Township school until he was 14, then he went to Hastings, Nebraska to live with an uncle. His uncle died and when twenty-one, he was called to Boulder Co., Colorado, because of his mother's illness. She had remarried and lived on a cattle ranch with her husband, Thomas H. Hugo, a man from Cornwall, England. Clarence took readily to the saddle and aided in management of the cattle ranch. His stepfather soon died and the overseeing of the ranch became his sole occupation. On May 8, 1894, he married Effie M. Williams and moved to a small hay ranch in Gordon Gulch, Gilpin County, Colorado, until 1902 when they started overland for Washington State.
