Rev. Harvey M. Lawson, Ph.B., B.D., "History and Genealogy of the Descendants of Clement Corbin of Muddy River (Brookline) Mass. and Woodstock, Conn.", 1905, "History and Genealogy of the Descendants of Clement Corbin , pp. 153-155 #221 REV. WILLIAM BASTON Corbyn, D.D. (Joseph P., William, Philip, James, Clement), "b. June 1, 1814, at Woodstock, Conn.; m. 1st Harriet N. Wright of Glastonbury, Conn., Aug. 13, 1814; she d. Jan. 21, 1843. He m. 2d Mary Frances McDonald of Hannibal, Mo., July 11, 1855. WILLIAM B. Corbyn moved with his parents to Henrietta, Monroe, New York, where he attended the public schools and the Monroe Academy, and in 1832 entered Phillips, Academy of Andover, Mass. He entered Yale College in 1835 and graduated in 1839. He supported himself while getting his education by teaching and other labors. After his graduation from Yale he accepted a position as tutor in Phillips Academy, continuing in that work for four years. It was while there that his thoughts were directed toward the ministry of the church. His parents were Baptists and he himself during his college career had contemplated entering the ministry of that body. He was drawn to the Episcopal Church largely through the influence of his brother, Almon D. Corbyn. He was confirmed in that Church in 1843 by Bishop Eastburn of Massachusetts, and on St. Stephen's day of that year was ordained to the diaconate in Trinity Church, Boston. His earnest and candid nature would not permit him to enter the Episcopal Church without carefully studying its teachings and history. He entered most heartily upon the work of the church, first as temporary rector of St. Paul's Church, Boston, and then for a time in Connecticut, where he was ordained to the priesthood in November, 1844, Bishop Doane of New Jersey preaching the sermon. In 1846 Mr. Corbyn went to Missouri and was rector of St. Paul's Church at St. Louis for eighteen months under Bishop Hawks. During this time he published "a manual of devotion." In 1848 at the earnest request of the bishop he became president of St. Paul's College at Palmyra, Mo., and rector of the church there, where he continued most of the time until 1871. Under his management this little Episcopal college came into a flourishing condition. He went to Quincy, Ill., in 1871, where he assumed the rectorship of the church of the Good Shepherd. Here he exercised a great influence far beyond the boundaries of his parish. Besides, his Church work he was for many years principal of the Quincy High School until this double duty became too arduous for his declining years. Dr. Corbyn visited England twice, in 1866 and in 1888. There he met many leaders of the Church of England and formed delightful acquaintances. Dr. Corbyn was a profound student of the English classics and considerable of a writer, among his works being poems of great beauty and merit. He had great personal influence over men and induced many young men to enter the ministry of the church. He was indeed a complete man without guile, strong and rugged in character, combined with simplicity, sweetness, and purity. His very presence was inspiring to faith and uplifting to the spiritual sense of those around him. His life was a constant walk with God. He was greatly devoted to the church and believed in its high mission in the world. On Dec 26, 1901, he quietly celebrated the 58th anniversary of his ordination as pastor and many friends called to pay their respects to the old man and wish him good cheer. He passed away on Good Friday, March 28, 1902. His widow and daughter still reside at Quincy, Illinois."
