" CAPT. CLEMENT CORBIN, (Clement, James, Clement), b. May 1, 1733; m. 1st Rachel Bacon, Nov. 18, 1753 at Dudley, He . 2d , Mary Fillebrown ("Philly Brown"), July 13, 1770. at Thompson, Comm. ( by Rev. Noadiah Russell). He bought land in Killingly (Thompson) of his father in 1757. He lived in the Thompson parish of Killingly in 1762, when he signed a petition with others for a school in the neighborhood. the petition was granted and District No. 11, known as "Capt. CORBIN's District," was established. This district was situated northwest of a "great hill" between the Quinnebaug and the French rivers and adjoined the Massachusetts line. (Miss Larned's History of Windham County.)
He was probably a soldier in the Revolution, although, as his son Clement was also a soldier, it is difficult to determine from the records which one is referred to. But family tradition says that he was in the Revolution. He was probably sergeant in a company which went to Rhode Island in Sullivan's campaign in 1778. He became known as "Captain" afterwards, but how he obtained the title is unknown. When Thompson became a separate town from Killingly in 1785, Clement CORBIN was one of those who took the freeman's oath. The births of the first nine children below (Rachel to Payson) are from the Killingly records, while those of the last five are recorded at Thompson. Tradition says that there were twenty-four children in this family, twelve by each wife. But, as seen below only seventeen are recorded. But the names of Charles, John, David, Peggy, Daniel, Horace, and Eliakim have been handed down by tradition as also belonging to this family.
Soon after 1795 Clement CORBIN removed with his family by his second wife to Bradford County, Pennsylvania. While living there he was kicked by a cow and his leg was so badly broken that it had to be amputated. He d. at Warren, Warren County, Pennsylvania, in 1825, age 92. His funeral sermon was preached by Rev. Salmon King, and he was buried in the Presbyterian cemetery there. His widow d. March, 1837, age 86. She was very much attached to Church, and in her later years, being afraid to ride, used to walk a mile and a half, with a cane in one hand and leaning on one of her grandchildren with the other.
About 1820 three grandchildren (by the first wife), Charles, Horace, and Ebenezer, came to Pennsylvania."
