PETER BUTLER m. Mehitable (ii.), was the son of James and Mary (Sigourney) Butler, his mother having been the granddaughter of Andrew Sigourney, the constable of the Huguenot Colony which settled at Oxford in 1686. His parents lived in Boston before the Revolutionary War, and when hostile movements were apprehended, removed to Maine, where he was born. Later they came to Oxford; he being then five years of age. He was brought up to the trade of his father, that of a hatter. This business they followed some years at Oxford at the old common, where they also kept a tavern and a store. Mr. Butler continued the mercantile business, and also cultivated a small farm, after his father's decease. He was a man of decided character and strict integrity; active in church affairs; had a retentive memory, well stored with the productions of the standard English writers, and also with the local traditions and facts of the town's history, and for general intelligence he exceeded the majority of his fellow-citizens. He was a social, kind-hearted, sympathetic man, unambitious, and indifferent to public preferment.
