While in Fawley lived variously in Badminston, Newtown and Hardley (obtained from children's baptismal records). On 10 Aug 1832 was charged with" being a rogue and a vagabond, having suffered his wife and children to become chargeable to the parish of Fawley although comitted for a similar offence in December last". The case was heard at the Michaelmas Quarter sessions in Winchester Castle, 16 oct 1832, but no prosecution was offered resulting in his acquittal. On 12 Apr 1833 similar charges were issued, to which he was found guilty and sentenced to 3 months in Winchester Bridewell. He appeared 3 more times before the Winchester Quarter Sessions, twice more for similar offences (earning him 6 months with hard labour and a private whipping the first time and three months with hard labour the second), and once for breach of peace.
