SOURCES AND ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
One of the original Patentees of the Town of New Harlem, New York. Alternate spellings of Given Name: Jan Louve or Jan Laurensen of Louens. Talcott (below) says he was commonly called "Jan Louwe," a contraction of Louens. Also gives the birth place of at least the older children as "Bedford, Long Island." He and wife Cornelia emmigrated to Bedford, Long Island in 1663 and moved to Harlem in 1672, so birth places of children can be figured from that. He was "of Schoenderwoert," a small village in the Provice of South Holland (Zuid-Holland) near Leerdam, Netherlands. Jan and Cornelia made a will 6 Sep 1761 at Harlem, New York City, New York. Note: Gilberta (Knickerbocker) Evans pointed out that this would have made them over 100 years old. surely there is an error. Maybe this date is supposed to be 1716? From Lottie Wells source (see below): Came to America in 16 April 1663 from Amsterdam on ship "Brindled Cow" ("Bonte Coe") with wife and two children; settled first at Bedford, Long Island for 9 years, then came to Harlem 1672. Jan became a magistrate and an eminent citizen. He and wife Cornelia united with Church there 27 May 1707. Revised History of Harlem says that Jan and family were living in Harlem at the time that Lysbet married Harmen Jansen Knickerbocker. Some family members estimate that he was born about 1630 in Holland, and use p. 4 of the New Harlem Register to show he was married to Cornelia Everts, although his birth date and the date of marriage is not found. History of Jan Louwe Bogaert (1630 - ca.1709) by Garry Bryant In the area of the town of Schoonderwoerd, Holland, one can find numerous families of the name of Bogert or Bogaert. Ten Dutch men by this surname traveled to America. Joost Boogaert lived for a time in Delaware, but returned to the Netherlands. Four Bogaert first cousins emigrated to New Amsterdam. Cornelius Cornelisz Bogaert (settled in Albany), Gysbert Cornelisz Bogaert (settled in the Catskill), and Theunis Gysbert Bogert of Heidkop (this family settled at the Wallabout in Brooklyn, New Amsterdam, in 1652 ,and married Sarah Rapalje in 1654), which is two miles north west of Schoonderwoerd, of which the later named town is 20 miles north of Rotterdam. Gijsbert in den Boogaertman (c.1540 - ????) Born about 1540 probably at the place of Hoogvanmidle, Schoonderwoerd, Zuid Holland, Netherlands. It is unknown who he married or when he died. Jan followed his cousin Theunis to the new colony aboard the ship 'Bonte Coe' (Spotted Cow) some ten years later. They arrived at New Amsterdam on 16 April 1663. The Bogert family on this journey consisted of his wife, Cornelia Everets, and two children age seven and four. The Bogerts settled first at the town of Bedford, Long Island, where they lived for nine years.16 In 1672 Bogert purchased the Montague farm at New Harlem where he lived until 21 September 1706, when he sold his farm to Capt. John Benson for £650. In the spring the Bogert family removed to the lower section of Manhattan Island, on a small farm near Canal Street or Chatham Square in New York City. While living at Harlem he was elected as a magistrate for 1675 and 1676. After leaving Harlem to New York City the family was admitted as members into the Dutch Reformed Church by certificate on 27 May 1707.17 Jan Louwe Bogert died about 1709. Information, shown in Notes below, was taken from pages 1-3, 6, 16, 20-22, 24-25, and 32. Author's sources in footnotes are referred to in the text and are available on authors pages 34-40.
Notes: Information on Jan Pietersen Haring is from 21 primary records including records from "his baptism in Hoorn, the Netherlands, his marriage in New Amsterdam, the baptisms of six of his seven children, his witnessing of a will, two (2) appointments to the office of schepen (magistrate), a reference to him as a "wheelewright," two references to a land venture in Manhattan, three references to his land holdings on Manhattan, a notarial record in Hoorn in 1680, two references to the deed to the Tappan Patent, and his death. Sybout Claasen is the presumed personal contact, and the three certain ones are Cosyn Gerritsen van Putten (Jan's father-in-law), Wolphert Webber, and Samuel Edsall…Previously, his occupation was unknown; now he can be identified as a wheelwright, the occupation of his father-in-law, Cosyn Gerritsen van Putten." (1, 2) On December 18, 1633, Jan, was baptized in the city of Hoorn. (2) His parents are recorded as Pieter Jansz and Maritie Pieters…Among Jan's 7 children are a Pieter, a Maritie, and a Cornelis-in the Dutch naming tradition called after his father, mother, and brother…haring being the Dutch word for herring." Jan married Cosyn Gerritsen Van Putten's daughter, Grietje Cosyns, on May 28, 1662, their marriage does not appear in the Reformed Dutch Church records, but it was recorded in a now lost family Bible seen by two historians, Franklin Burdge in the 1870s and George Budke in the 1920s. The record also appears in the Haring Family Notebook, now at the D.A.R. library in Washington, D.C." (22) "Since he was baptized in Hoorn on December 18, John (Jan) Haring could not have been born on December 26. It has to be assumed that the 2 is a mistake for a 1. The passage should read "born the 16 day of December 1633." (23) "During the years from 1664 to 1681, Jan Pietersen Haring and Grietje Cosyns had seven children. All but the eldest are recorded in the baptismal records of the New York Reformed Dutch Church. The baptism of their eldest child, Pieter, does not appear in the Church records, but the missing Bible and the Haring Notebook have him born on August 13, 1664… Because of this, some may question whether this son existed, but, despite the missing record, Pieter Haring was surely born. He inherited one of his father's shares in the Tappan Patent, married Margrietje Jans Bogert, the daughter of Jan Louwe Bogert, in the New York Reformed Dutch Church, and served for many years as Orange County's delegate to the New York Assembly. The baptisms of Jan and Grietje's six other children in the New York Reformed Dutch Church are Vroutje, 15 May 1667, Cosyn, 31 [sic] February 1669, Cornelis, 10 April 1672, Brechtje, 17 July 1675, Marytie, 11 October 1679, and Abraham, 13 December 1681. In the 1669 baptism of his son Cosyn, Jan is referred to for the first time in the extant records as Jan Pieterszen Haring. (26)…Jan Pietersen Haring died, intestate, on December 7, 1683, just weeks short of age 50, even before the patent was officially granted by the Provincial Council and confirmed by Governor Thomas Dongan."
