Note:From "History of Washington County, Maryland by Thomas J C William - 1906, 1968, 1992. Page 1222. The Newcomer family of Washington County is of Swiss origin. The older members were Mennonites, and as a rule their descendants have adhered to the simplest forms of religion, many of them now belonging to the German Baptist or Dunkard Church, others to the Christian or Disciples of Christ. Wolfgang Newcomer, the progenitor of the Washington County Newcomers, came to America from Switzerland in 1749, landing with his parents in Philadelphia, where he worked at his trade of carpenter. He married Elizabeth Weller and had three sons and five daughters. He removed to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and turned his attention to agriculture. Of the daughters there is no record. The sons, Henry, Christian and Peter settled in Washington Co, Maryland, where descendants of these three brothers are still to be found and continue to hold the respect and esteem of those among whom they live, like their ancestors, honest, steady, industrious, frugal, independent, hospitable and generous. Many of them are farmers and millers, but in so large a family all branches of labor are represented. Many have moved to the west and are men of prominence in the communities where they live. Henry Newcomer, the eldest son of Wolfgang Newcomer, married Barbara Garver and had children, Samuel, Henry, Christian, Peter, Joel, Daniel, John, Joshua, Bettie, Barbara, Sallie, Mary and Nancy. Christian Newcomer, the second son of Wolfgang, was a bishop of the United Brethren Church, and spent his life in earnest Christian work. He married Elizabeth Baer and had children, Andrew, David, Jacob, and Elizabeth. It was from his diary that the origin of the Newcomer family was secured.
From "A Genealogy of Henry, Christian and Peter Newcomer, sons of Wolfgang Newcomer", compiled by Alexander and Margaret Newcomer, pub. 1880. Wolfgang Newcomer came to America from Switzerland in 1749, and landed with his parents in Philadelphia where he worked at his trade of carpenter. Had 3 sons and 5 daughters. Moved to Lancaster County, PA and turned to farming.
