Biography

Colonel Garrett Van Meter served with Virginia Militia during the American Revolution.

Garrett Van Meter is a DAR Patriot Ancestor,A118420.
Garret Van Meter was born in 1732 in New York or New Jersey. He was killed by Indians April 17, 1788.[1]
Garrett Van Meter was born about 1732 and died about 1788.[2]
Garrett Vanmeter witnessed the will of Aaron Hill of Salem County, New Jersey on 21 February 1750. Within the following few years, he moved with his father and siblings to New Jersey.
Garrett Van Meter was Colonel of the Virginia Militia 1775-1776, he was killed at Fort Pleasant, Hardy, VA, 17 April 1788 as per the DAR Patriot Index citing Heitman, History Reg. of the Officers of the Continental Army during the War of the Rev. 1775-1783, page 556.[3]

Executors: my said two sons Isaac VanMeter and Jacob VanMeter
signed 1 April 1788: Garret VanMeter (Seal)[5]
witnesses: Daniel McNeill, Tabitha Inskeep, Henry Hawk, John Sibley
proved 7 July 1788 in Hardy County, Virginia (now West Virginia), by the oaths of Daniel McNeill, John Sibley and Tabitha Inskeep
Isaac Vanmeter and Jacob Vanmeter ("Certificate is granted them for obtaining a probate" by the court)
Description of land left to sons included the following names:
•John Sibley ("John Sibley's line")
•George Stricker (purchased of ~)
•Thomas Neale (bought of ~)
•Lord Fairfax ("...acres which I hold of the Late Lord Fairfax bearing Date the Sixth day of March One Thousand seven Hundred and Eighty")
•William Lane (purchased of ~)
•Martha Williams (purchased of ~, "containing sixty eight acres which I hold by Lease from Lord Fairfax the 7th of August 1779.")
•Abel Seymour‘s Land (will directs sons to pay balance of 600 pounds to daughter Ann)
Direction in the will implied that he had no grandchildren when he wrote the will:
•My will and desire is that if any of my children should die without lawfull [sic] issue in that case their parts of my Estate shall be equally divided between the survivours [sic], ...
In additionIfound the following of interest:
•I leave my stills and still house to stand where they now do and the profits to be equally divided between my two sons.
