We have come here today to pay our respects to our common paternal and maternal grandparents - Frederick and Hannah Dawes.
They made that long sea journey from England to Melbourne before the First World War to make a new life for their 6 children.
We are here today because of them.
Here is a brief account of the life of Frederick and Hannah DAWES.
Frederick Townsend DAWES was born on 2 December, 1868, at Gayton, Norfolk. His father was Robert and his mother was Mahala FAWKES.
Frederick had an elder brother, Robert, and a younger sister, Louise.
Like his father, Frederick was a farmer. His stock of trade all of his life was working with his hands. His children have described him as honest and hardworking. After he came to Australia, he worked in various jobs as a fencer for the railways and other labouring work. He was tall and lean, a quiet man, smoked a pipe, never touched the evil drink, followed the horses and loved cricket. He played cricket with his boys.
The Dawes family home, Wizard Lodge, is still there today, in Gayton. It has been visited by numerous grandchildren from Australia, and from the outside, little has changed from the years when our ancestors lived there.
Hannah Eleanor NICHOLS was born on 6 April, 1867, at North Runcton, Norfolk. Her father was Jonathan and her mother was Amy HAWES.
Hannah was one of six children. Her brothers were Herbert, Walter, John and Ernest, and sisters were Amy and Sarah (both of whom emigrated to Canada).
Hannah was able to get a better education than Frederick. Before she was married she worked as a school teacher and tutor, including on the Sandringham Estate, the Royal family's summer residence, which is not far from Gayton.
Hannah and Frederick were in their early 30s when they married, in Gayton. She is described as a reserved, soft and caring person, very much cherished by her children.
Why then, when in their 40s, with six young children, aged from 12 years to under 12 months old, did they decide to move to Australia - to a strange, far off land, with no known family here?

It may be that Frederick, being the second born, decided with Hannah that their economic circumstances would be better in Australia with their six children, rather than sharing or inheriting the tenant farm, which traditionally Frederick's brother Bob had first right.
They emigrated on an unassisted passage but were helped financially by Hannah's uncle, Ernest Nichols.
The Dawes family arrived in Melbourne on the ship "Benalla" from London, via Capetown and Adelaide, on 10th April, 1914.
Hannah Dawes was 47, Frederick 45, and their children: Alexander, 12, Herbert, 10, John, 8, Amy, 6, Violet, 3, and Jewel, 8 months.
Their first experience in Melbourne was far from welcoming. A conman, claiming to be an agent, robbed them of a substantial sum of money, but somehow Frederick and Hannah made do with what they had left.
After living at numerous locations, first at Richmond, then Yarraville, at a house off Sommerville Rd (near where we are having the picnic today), Tottenham, then finally settling at 80 Stanhope St, West Footscray, where their sons helped build the family home.
Among us today are Frederick's and Hannah's grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren, and their partners; also among us is their only surviving child, Jewel, who will be 88 in May.
Their descendants are of eldest son - Alexander Frederick, who married Ruby HOLLIBONE, and their children: John Alexander, Annie Eleanor, Ernest Frederick, Coral Jewel, Alexander Charles, and Jewel Amy.
Of second eldest son - Herbert Charles, who married Ethel TREVENA, and their children: Phyllis Marie, Glen Herbert, Barry Trevena, Judith Beverley, Jennifer Alice, Keith Frederick, and John William.
Of third eldest son - John Townsend, who married Irene DAVIS, and their children: Irene Elaine, and Terrence John.
Of eldest daughter - Amy Winifred, who married Harold MITCHELL, and their children: Gregory Earle, Harold Frederick, and Malcolm Robert.
Of second eldest daughter - Violet Elizabeth, who married George FINLAY, and their children: George Frederick, Bryan John, Jewel Elizabeth, and John Charles.
And youngest daughter - Jewel Eleanor Grace, who married Dudley MOMSEN, and their children: Leigh Jewel, and Gayle Tasma.

Hannah has rested here since passing away on 2 Sep 1933, at age 66, and Frederick since 16 Dec 1948, at age 80.
We pay our respects and sincerely thank you, Frederick and Hannah, for not only your toil and efforts in raising your 6 children, but also for your decision to emigrate. If it wasn't for you we would not be here today, living in Australia, a good country with a good future for all of your descendants.
