Sie ist verheiratet mit William Henry Trevena.
Sie haben geheiratet am 21. April 1869 in St James Church of England, West Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, sie war 22 Jahre alt.
Kind(er):
I am Kaye Carroll (nee Alexander) born 1945 at Morwell.
Mrs Caroline Trevena was Mum’s grandmother (ie Brenda Alexander’s grandmother and my great grandmother. She was Brenda’s mother’s mother). Because the actual copy from the newspaper is hard to read I have retyped it here word for word, though it is not well written.
The death occurred last evening at 6 o’clock of Mrs Caroline Frances Trevena, wife of W. H. Trevena, of Clear Creek, Eldorado, after a brief illness of one week, the cause of death being double pneumonia and heart failure. Dr. W. Barker was called in on Saturday to attend Mrs Trevena, and as he found her condition serious, he brought her in his motor car to “Aberleigh” private hospital, where every attention was given her. She showed improvement yesterday, but during the afternoon took a serious turn and death ensued a couple of hours later.
The late Mrs Trevena was 67 years of age, and a native of Melbourne, being the daughter of Mr George Vinge, of Messrs Foster and Vinge, the well-known early day coach proprietors. In 1869, in St James Church of England, Melbourne, Miss Vinge was married to Mr Trevena and they afterwards went to live at Kyneton, where Mr Trevena had property and carried on farming and grazing. From there they removed to Shepparton where they lived for 20 years. Then they resided at Seymour for 12 years and took up their residence at Clear Creek Station, Eldorado, 10 years ago, where they have earned the esteem and respect of residents.
Mrs Trevena, although of a retiring disposition, made many friends by her pleasant and amiable nature. Sincere regret will be expressed at her unexpected death. At Shepparton, Mrs Trevena, who was the possessor of a pleasing soprano voice, frequently assisted at local concerts and was a member of the Philharmonic Society. Much sympathy is expressed for Mr Trevena and family in their sad bereavement. Two sons and three daughters survive, namely Messrs Harry (Brighton) and William (Deniliquin); Mrs Murray and Misses Hilda and Olive Trevena of Eldorado. Her sisters Mrs Warry (Brighton), Mrs Frayze and Mrs Vinge (Elsternwick), Mrs Rowe (Shepparton) and Messrs Geo. (South Yarra), Albert (Wangaratta), and Edward Vinge (Princetown) are brothers.
The funeral will take place on Thursday afternoon from Wangaratta, and the remains will be interred in the Wangaratta Cemetery. The funeral arrangements are in the hands of Mr O. V. Steele.
I would make the following points:
1. The report omits the fact that William and Caroline Trevena once lived in a home at Burwood called Vingeleigh (Obviously named after Caroline’s maiden name). I have photos of Vingeleigh which I will post and used to have a family wedding photo taken in the ballroom there but can’t find that.. Vingeleigh later became a hospital and then Presbyterian Ladies College. It still stands in the grounds of Presbyterian Ladies College.
1. George Vinge, Caroline’s father, was sent to Tasmania as a convict, on the boat the Red Rover in 1831. After he had served his 7 years he was given a ticket of leave, moved to Melbourne and became a police constable. He and a Mr Foster set up a coach company and at one time had 200 horses in a stable where the Collingwood Town Hall now stands. That was sold to Cobb and Co. He later owned hotels at various locations, the last being in Shepparton.
2. I don’t think the family ever knew that George Vinge had been a convict. I have a copy of Caroline’s wedding certificate stating that George Vinge was ‘a gentleman’ from England.
3. I have the Bible that was presented to William and Caroline Trevena by their uncles and aunts on the occasion of their wedding in 1969
4. Caroline Trevena died just 8 months before her granddaughter, Madge Murray, (Aunty Madge) was born. Aunty Madge is still living and will turn 100 on 17th March this year (2015). (There is going to be a family gathering to celebrate her birthday at her son Neil’s house on Saturday 21st March) .My mother, Brenda, would have been just 4 years old when her grandmother Caroline died.
