Austin Shipp was born on May 5, 1808 in Campbellsville, Green, Kentucky, United States. He was the 10th child of Richard Shipp and Mary Copeland. He had five sisters and six brothers. He must have worked and saved his money, because when they moved to Johnson County, Indiana, Austin bought land on June 19, 1826 right after he turned age 18.. He was the first student from Johnson County, Indiana who ever attended the Indiana State Seminary in Bloomington, Indiana (which is now Indiana University). He started teaching in 1830 in an old cabin on the Marshall farm, 3 miles northeast of Edinburgh, Indiana.
Austin met Louisa Caroline Farnsworth and she became his wife on the 5th of May 1835 in Johnson County, Indiana. He became a business merchant and that occupation served him well throughout his life. In the 1850 census, Johnson County, Indiana –Blue River Township, Austin Shipp’s occupation is listed as a Merchant. They owned many acres of land which was wooded. This land supplied their wood for heat in the winter and also barrels of nuts. They built a fine two-story house which they furnished nicely, including a fine piano. Austin had a large crosscut saw which was used for cutting their winter’s wood. He hired men to operate it.
Austin Shipp and Louisa Caroline Farnsworth had nine children:
i.Milford Bard Shipp, b. 03 Mar 1836, ,Edinburg, Johnson, IN, d. 14 Mar 1918, Salt Lake City, Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, UT.

Louisa Caroline Farnsworth was baptized a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on August 25, 1858. The 1860 census shows the family still in Edinburgh, Indiana. The family came to Utah in 1864 and settled in Salt Lake City, and opened a store there. Later on, Austin bought a farm for the boys in Sevier County. Austin was baptized a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on the 4th of November, 1868. His wife noted that Austin was a handsome man of good moral habits. We were very happy together she would declare. The piano they brought from Indiana was placed in President Brigham Young's home. They also brought shrubbery, lilac bushes, and other kinds. One of the most important days in the lives of Austin and Louisa was the day they received their own endowments and were sealed for time and for all eternity on the 9th of January 1871 at the Endowment House in Salt Lake City, Utah.
A new development came into their lives soon thereafter. Austin turned age 65, and his first wife was age 56. They had been married for 38 years. They made the decision for Austin to marry another woman in the new and everlasting covenant of marriage, a young, 26 year old divorcee, who had three children Edward Walker Sewell age 8, James McDonough Sewell age 5, and Mary Alice Dotson age 1 and also take care of her widowed mother, Mary Ann Forrester McDonough, who was age 51. On the 17th of September 1873 at the Endowment House, Austin married his second wife, Samantha Jane McDonough.
Children of Austin Shipp and Samantha Jane Mc Donald are:
i.Ira Kent Shipp, b. 16 Oct 1875, ,Beaver, Beaver, UT, d. 30 Jul 1957.
ii.Eva Burnetta Shipp, b. 06 Dec 1880, ,Beaver, Beaver, UT, d. 02 Apr 1967, ,Las Vegas, Clark, NV.
Austin was arrested at least once on the charge of polygamy. Many of the members of the Church who had plural wives went into hiding and some went to Mexico to avoid prosecution, which may have included Austin too.
Austin Shipp passed away in Salt Lake City, Utah on May 18, 1892 having lived a long life of 84 years.
