Kind(er):
Dennison attended Thetford Academy and taught school in Orange, VT for 4 years. He was the Town Clerk and Treasurer from 1857 to 1861. Soon after his marriage, he purchased the property of Samuel D. Bonfils in Fairlee, VT. It consisted of 140 acres and a comfortable red brick farmhouse which is still in use. He farmed the land for 15 years, incidentally building miles of stone fence from the many rocks he picked out of the soil. In the meantime, 2 of his brothers, Carleton and Gardner Melendy, homesteaded adjoining 160 acre farms near Plainview, Wabasha County, MN. Soon their sisters, Azubah, who married Jonathan Colby Jr. and Olive, who married Lyman Moore, followed their brothers to Plainview, MN. In 1868, Gardner Melendy died without leaving a will. His estate was settled with 1/3 going to his widow, Jennie Burton Melendy, and 2/3 to his brothers and sisters. Soon Azubah Colby offered her interest to Dennison if he would come out and take over the farm. Gardner's widow had married again and was not interested in keeping the farm. She sold her interest to Dennison and he bought out the rest of his brothers and sisters, sold his home in Fairlee, VT and at the age of 56 set out for the West and a new adventure. He drove his team of Morgan horses all the way to MN and settled down to become a wheat farmer. After 1899, when he was 75, each of Dennison's 3 children took their turn at helping him run the farm, sharing the spacious 2-story farmhouse built by Gardner, which they divided into a duplex so that each family had its own quarters. First Edgar, then Nettie, and finally Marcus shared the house and the work with their parents. Up to the age of 95, Dennison took care of the lawns and a garden of nearly an acre, hoed and cared for potatoes, raising over 125 bushels which he dug and carried to the cellar. When he was in his 80's, he could still stand on his head. He was an artist when it came to sawing wood, splitting it, hauling it to the woodshed, in a homemade wheelbarrow, and stacking it. He also helped shock grain in the fields. He kept up his interest in education by serving on the schoolboard for many years. One of his favorite sayings was that he smoked once and drank once and anyone who did either one twice was a fool. Grandpa Melendy was a wonderful example to his grandchildren and great-grand children, all of whom visited him on his farm for many years.
