The accident occurred early Thursday morning. He went to the field to finish plowing and planting a field of corn. Mrs. Gardner seeing the team loose immediately went to them and found they had run away, become unhitched and Bert was lying about 200 yards away. Dr. E. W. Sullivan was summoned and Bert was rushed to the hospital where the X-ray showed five broken ribs one piercing the lungs. His suffering was very intense. He passed away at 2:30 in the afternoon. Bert was the son of M. F. and Ellen Gardner, was born July 22, 1885; passed away May 30, 1940 at the Dimmitt Memorial Hospital in Humansville, Missouri, age 54 years, 10month and 8 days. He was united in marrage with Miss Nellie Smith on March 14, 1906. Four children were born to his union, three daughters passed away in infancy. one son, Watson of the home, with the companion survive. Also two brothers, Andy and Paul Gardner, three sisters, Mrs. Ellen and Mrs Cuba Baker, all of Collins, Missouri, and Mrs Clara Mae Lovewell of Appleton City, Missouri. One brother and sister preceeding him in death. He confessed faith in Christ in 1910 and was a charter member of the Mt.Pleasant Baptist Church, later placing his membership with the Vista Baptist Church. His tragic death was not only a shock to the family but cast a gloom of sadness over the entire community. Friends and neighbors did all within their power to relieve the agony but to no avail. Funeral services were conducted at the Vista Baptist Church on Saturday afternoon with a former pastor, Rev. Woodrow Rosecran officiate. Burial in the Freeman-Holsapple Cemetery, at Collins, Missouri.
