Wakefield Coroner's Report
At the house of Henry Coles, the Devonshire Arms Inn, Barnsley on Saturday the sixth day of May 1871 on view of the body of JESSE VINE deceased.
ELIZA VINE of Cudworth widow says deceased was my husband. He was 32 years old and a Railway labourer. He left home yesterday morning about 6 o'clock to go to his work as usual. He generally got home about 6 o'clock in an evening. He was in good health and spirits. He had been on the railway 5 or 6 weeks. He was a coproliter before.
ALFRED SIMPSON of Cudworth, Railway labourer sw. says, I have known deceased about a month and have been working with him during that time. We were digging holes for Semaphores at Oaks Junction yesterday and finished about half past 5'oclock. I was following about 5 yards behind him as he walked in the "six foot" of the Midland Branch Railway toward Barnsley Station and got past Measbrough Dyke. I then saw a man about 100 yards before me wave his hand as is usually done for a person to keep clear of the line and I heard a train coming behind. I shout4ed to deceased and kept on the "4 foot" with the two men next me and I then saw a train coming on the same line of rails. Deceased had stept on the other line but again stept into the "6 foot" and then into the "down 4 foot" as we stept out of it into the "up 4 foot" as the train, a Manchester Express, passed. The train left deceased in the "down 4 foot". He was quite dead. His head and left hand were smashed. He was lying straight out. I heard a whistle. There was another train running on the low line alongside us and going in the same direction. The line is curved there.
JOSEPH HORBURY of Waltham Street Barnsley Repairer on the Midland Railway sw. says, I do not recollect having seen deceased until yesterday morning. He worked all right during the day. I left about half past 5 o'clock and had walked along the line and got into Barnsley Township when I saw the wire which turns the Back signal move and I looked back and saw the Leeds to Manchester Express on the viaduct. I made a signal to those behind. They seemed to be noticing a Lancashire and Yorkshire Goods train on the adjoining railway. From the marks in the "4 foot" deceased's body appeared to have been turned over 2 or 3 times and dragged about 19 yards. He had got clear once but on getting to the edge of the line he turned back. Both trains were whistling.
