The earliest reference to Snape c.1200 is in the Battle Abbey cartulary recording the gift of 'all my lands of Snape in the parish of Wadehurst to the Abbot and Convent of Battle.' The Abbey owned Snape until the dissolution; then for almost three hundred years it was part of the Glynde Lands in the care of the Barham family.
DAVID BARHAM inherited the place in the 1590's whilst still a ward of his uncle, WILLIAM COURTHOPE of Whiligh. In 1617 he built a new house here and when his great grandson, also called David, sold Snape in 1721 it passed out of Barham ownership for some 160 years.
1597 David was 16 and under the guardianship of his Uncle, William Courthope of Buckling Hall, Wadhurst. David's eldest brother was William Barham.
1621 David was a churchwarden of Wadhurst.
1622 He married Helen, daughter of William Fowl, of Lightlands in the neighbouring parish of Frant. The Fowls were ironmasters, and owned a furnace and residence at Riverhall, just within the boundaries of Wadhurst. Later on they became further intermarried with the Barhams.
David Barham died possessed of Snape on 18th February 1643-44, and is buried in the south aisle of the parish church, under a decorative iron slab, which bears the arms of the Courthopes, his mother's family. The same slab carries the initials A.B., and the date, 1688, commemorating his daughter-in-law Anne. One other initial in the church bearing the Courthope arms has the initials I. B., and the date 1657; it is for John Barham.
Did David first marry Margaret Keymer in Oct 1613 in Chiddingly?
