Cassandra Leigh was the daughter of Thomas Leigh, the rector of Harpsden, near Henley-on-Thames in Oxfordshire, and his wife Jane (nee Walker.) Upon his retirement, Mr. Leigh moved to Bath, but died shortly afterwards.
On the 26th April 1764 at St. Swithin's Church in Bath, Cassandra married the Reverend George Austen (q.v.), the vicar of Steventon in Hampshire. None of his family were present at the wedding, and the bride wore a red riding habit. They were to have eight children, of whom Jane, the notable novelist, was the seventh. Like his father-in-law before him, George Austen retired to Bath. After his death, his widow returned to Hampshire, where she is buried next to her fifth child, also named Cassandra.
Her will was proved March 12, 1827 at Chawton.
