1851 aged 4, living at Catts Cottage, Little Underriver with her grandparents, John and Jane Ranger, brother William Bennett and uncles Daniel and George Ranger.
However, there is also a Jane Bennett living at Underriver with her grandparents John and Elizabeth Bennett, although this Jane is probably the illegitimate daughter of Mary Bennett.
Jane Bennett was the eldest child of Rebekah Ranger, grand-daughter of John Ranger and Jane Francis, and great grand-daughter of Michael Ranger and Elizabeth Cogger. She was born circa 1846 in the small Kent village of Underriver and baptised on 12th July 1846 at the picturesque church of St Peter and St Paul, Seal, Kent, situated on a hill with a wonderful view of the valley below. Her father, George Bennett, seems to have disappeared off the scene by the time Jane was 4 years old, at which time, according to the 1851 census, she is found living with her grandparents John and Jane Ranger, at Catts Cottage, Underriver. (Also living there is Jane's brother William, aged 2).
1861 aged 14, visiting widow Mary Ann Restall 49, a laundress born Whitechapel, and children Susan Ann 25 and William Restall 22 at 33 Regent Row, Lambeth St Matthew. Not confirmed this is correct Jane Bennett. Birthplace entered as Sevenoaks.
At some point Jane moved to the London area and on the 23rd February 1869 she married Frederick Harris at the parish church of West Hackney, Middlesex; he is listed as widower, and his profession was that of a coachman. His father was named on the marriage certificate as William Harris, tailor.
1871 aged 25, living at No.6 Kings Head Yard, Clapham High Road, Hackney St John with her husband Frederick Harris, stepdaughters Esther 9 and Florence 7, and her illegitimate son Herbert Bennett 8.
Frederick was the son of William and Frances Harris, but his birth is a bit of a mystery. He first appears on the 1841 census for Woodford, Essex, aged 13, then again in 1851, by which time his father is listed as "master tailor" and Frederick is aged 24. He appears in the 1871 census as a coachman, living at No. 6 Kings Head Yard (just off Upper Clapton Road), now married to Jane Bennett. He already had two children from a previous marriage, Esther born 1863, and Frances born 1865, who were living with them, along with a surprise discovery, Jane's illegitimate 8 year old son, Herbert Bennett, born in Underriver.
Jane and Frederick had 6 children: Mary Ann (1874), Ellen (1875), William (1877), Charlotte (1879), George (1880), Albert John (1883) and Frederick (1886). We know that at the time of the birth of William on the 29th April 1877 the family were living at 44 Mildmay Street, Islington and Frederick was now a cab driver; 4 years later (1881 census) they had moved to another house on the same road, 24 Mildmay Street, and it looks as though Jane had a small business going on in the house. She is listed as a dressmaker, along with her two step-daughters Esther and Frances, respectively listed as dressmaker and fur sewer. According to the family, Jane was a Court Dressmaker.
Four years later, in 1885, Frederick died and Jane was left to look after her family on her own. However it seems that by 1889 she had remarried, as she is found in the 1901 census as Jane Alexander aged 56, with another child, Mabel Alexander.
1891 cannot find any of the family in this census. However there is an Ada Harris, widow, at 60 Mildmay Road with 3 children Florence 6, Frederick 5 and Herbert 3, could this be Jane, Frederick is the correct age but the other 2 children I have not been aware of so far in my research. Ada is also a dressmaker aged 47. There is also a widowed Jane Harris aged 46 and shown as a "fur liner" lodging at 32 Lever Street, Finsbury St Luke, however her birthplace is shown as Marylebone.
1901 widow aged 56, living at 14 Leconfield Road, Mildmay, Highbury, Islington St Augustines with her children William 24, Lottie 22, Fred 15, and her daughter Mabel Alexander 9, from her second marriage. Also boarding here were Charles Pryor 25, a saddler from Brandon, Suffolk, William Ryder 22, a carpenter born Hungerford, Berkshire who later married Lottie, Fritz Eggeling 24, a bank clerk from Germany and a visitor Richende Griffen 30 a music vocalist from France.
Leconfield Road was laid out in 1873; in 1877 Leconfield Road was nearly filled with two-storeyed terraces with basements, and Poet's Road was built up between Petherton and Leconfield roads.
1911 widow aged 65, visiting her married daughter and son in law, Ellen 35 and William Golding Kingston 38, with her daughter Mabel Alexander 19 at 56 Church Road, Barnes, SW London.
Jane later moved in with her youngest daughter Mabel and her husband William Keene and lived with them until her death, (for which I have not yet found a date). My mother has memories of visiting her grandmother Jane when she was a child and can remember her always making new dresses for her doll, regardless of the fact that she suffered from arthritis, probably caused by many years of sewing.
