In 1170, the Manors of Clifton and Salwick were in the possession of Walter, son of Osbert. His son William was the first to take the surname CLIFTON. It may well be that the Manor of Westby-with-Plumpton was also held by the family, though it is not specifically mentioned in the documents until the early 1200s.
In 1606, the Manors of Lytham and Little Marton were acquired by purchase while the Manor and Rectory of Kirkham were held on lease from the Dissolution until the 19th century. Settlements made on marriages with the Molyneuxes of Sefton have resulted in documents relating to that family being found among the Clifton muniments. (see R. Cunniliffe Shaw, The Clifton Papers.) note: from Guide to the Lancashire Record Office, 1962.

____________________ The manor of Lytham was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Lidun.[1] In the 12th century it was given to the Benedictine monks of Durham Priory for the foundation of a monastic cell—Lytham Priory. Following the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 1530s, Lytham Priory came into the possession of Sir Richard Molyneux. 'In 1606 the land was acquired by local landowner Cuthbert Clifton who built a house there.[2][3] Cuthbert's descendant', Thomas Clifton, replaced that house with the current hall, which was built 1757–1764 to the design of John Carr.[4] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lytham_Hall ______________ 'A genealogical and heraldic dictionary of the landed gentry of ..., Vol. 1 By John Burke, Bernard Burke A genealogical and heraldic dictionary of the landed gentry of ..., Vol. 1 By John Burke, Bernard Burke p. 232 _________ http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~clifton/clifton/c8a.htm XVII.
