Arrangements for the marriage of Hugh de Vere and Hawise de Quency, 1225 - giving details of Hawise's maritagium and the fine paid to the king for her marriage. British Library, London, Harley Charter 55, B5 (first document); and C. Roberts, ed., Esccerpta e Rotulis Finium in Turri Londinensi Asservatis Henrico Tertio Rege, 1216- 72, 2 vols., Record Commission, London, 1835-36, I, p. 101 (second document); in Latin, translated by Jennifer Ward Know men present and future that I Margaret de Quency countess of Winchester have given, granted and by this my charter confirmed to Hugh de Vere in free marriage with Hawise my daughter £4 8s worth of rent, namely 20s rent which Roger de Belegrave owed me with the homage and service which was due to me, and 17s 6d rent in Laughton which Geoffrey de Cranford owed me with the homage and service which was due to me, and 50s 6d rent in Thurmaston which Alexander de Witeby owed me with the homage and service which was due to me. To have and to hold of me and my heirs to them and their heirs who will be born of Hawise, well, peacefully, freely and quietly in free marriage.* And if it should happen, which God forbid, that Hawise should die without an heir begotten by Hugh, all the said rent will revert peacefully together with the homage and service into my hands or the hands of my heirs. And be it known that if I Margaret or my heirs can acquire and deliver to Hugh those six virgates of land with appurtenances which the prior of Brackley and Henry de Faffinton hold in the will of Wigston Magna or if we have made an exchange to the value of the said six virgates in the same county before he takes Hawise his wife to his home, then the aforenamed £4 8s rent will revert peacefully to me and my heirs. And I Margaret and my heirs will warrant to Hugh and Hawise his wife and their heirs who will be born of Hawise all the said rent, as is aforesaid, against all people. In order that this should be valid I have affixed my seal to the pre sent writing. Witnessed by John de Beauchamp, Ernald de Boys, William de Chapwell, Everard de Trumpithon, John de Hulecotes, Fulk de Vaux, Geoffrey de Capell, Peter de Beche, and many others. Margaret countess of Winchester made fine with the lord king for 400 marks in order that her daughter Hawise might be married to Hugh son and heir of R[obert] de Vere, late earl of Oxford. She will render 100 marks to the lord king at Easter in the seventh year of his reign [1223] 100 marks at Michaelmas [29 September] in the same year, 100 marks at Easter in year 8 [1224], and 100 marks at the following Michaelmas in the same year. *[JW's footnote: Stipulations concerning succession are more precise in the thirteenth century and later than in the twelfth. The warranty clause guaranteed the tenure of Hugh and Hawise. Margaret was the widow of Saer de Quency earl of Winchester who died in 1219. Hugh de Vere's wardship had been bought by his mother from the king in 1221; Patent Rolls 1216-25, pp. 319, 341. Hugh did homage to the king for his inheritance in 1231.] [JW's footnote: A fine denoted an agreement with the king or a lord for which a sum of money was paid, often in instalments.]
