Winthrop, having decided some time before to emigrate to New England, was elected Governor of the Massachusetts-Bay Company on 20 Oct 1629. That day in a letter to Margaret telling of his election, he added: "Let John enquire out 2: or 3: Carpenters: and knowe how many of our neighbours will goe, that we may provide shipps for them". John Sanford aided in recruiting passengers for the Winthrop fleet. According to Governor Winthrop's order on Wednesday, 28 October, Sanford left Groton with the horses and arrived in London the next day at the home and apothecary shop of Winthrop's brother-in-law, THOMAS FONES, at the Sign of the Three Fawnes in Old Bailey. The next day Governor Winthrop, Priscilla Fones, and John Sanford returned to Groton arriving on Saturday.
