Henry Howland was a yeoman, (a farmer who cultivates his own land), who spent his entire life in or near the town of Fen Stanton. Since he was born there, his parents must have moved from the village of Newport Pond in the adjoining county of Essex shortly after their marriage in 1560.
Henry Howland, of the Parish of Fenny Stanton, Huntingdonshire, died at Fen Stanton, 17 May 1635. His wife, Margaret, buried at Fen Stanton, 31 Jul 1629. Fen Stanton is about 1-2 miles south of St. Ives, near to Huntingdon, in the area northwest of Cambridge. Huntingdonshire county no longer exists.
The identity of this family is proved by the probate records of their son, Humphrey Howland, a draper, who settled in St. Swithin's Parish, in London. In his will proved in 1646 by his second wife, Ann (Mary), Humphrey Howland mentioned his brothers, Arthur, John, Simon and Henry, and his sister, Margaret, wife of Richard Phillips. This ties the family to Fenstanton.
They had seven children: Arthur, John, Margaret, Humphrey, George, Simon and Henry. In 1963, the John Howland Society of Plymouth, MA, erected a bronze tablet in the Fenstanton Church "In memory of HENRY HOWLAND who was bur. in the churchyard of this parish on 17 May 1635 - Father of John Howland a pilgrim to America on the Mayflower 1620." Erected by the Pilgrim Hohn Howland Society 17 May 1966.
The "Old Colony Howlands" descend from his three sons: Arthur, John and Henry. Arthur and Henry came in either the FORTUNE in 1621 or the ANN 1623 (per "Certain Comeovers" by Henry Howland Crapo, Volume I.) Their brother John was the first of the family to reach America, coming on the original MAYFLOWER.
"Howland " was a location phrase for 'Land at the ancient bur. mound '. This alluded to a prehistoric tomb where the ancestors farmed. The Howland coat-of-arms, granted in 1584, has two black bars below three blackrampant lions on a silver shield.
Three sons, Humphrey, George, and Simon were merchants in London. Arthur, John, and Henry came to America.
Henry was md. twice, first to a woman named Ann who lived in the same area and then to Margaret Aires from Essex. Each marriage produced five children. Three of the five offspring of his first marriage would go to the new world and become part of the Plymouth Plantation of Cape Cod Bay. A son by his second wife also joined them. Some references say that all sailed on the Mayflower but, although they apparently were early arrivals there, only one can be confirmed by the records of that colony as being among the passengers.
NOTE: I believe that Ann and Margaret are one and the same as do various other genealogists. DLP.
Note: While there is no verification, possibly due to the state of panic caused in England at this time by the epidemic of plague (Black Death) at the time, many researchers believe that most of the Howland family that stayed in England died of the plague and possibly the only survivors were the three brothers (John, Arthur and Henry) who immigrated to America.
Famous descendants: Presidents: Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Richard Milhous Nixon, and George Herbert Walker Bush.
