During the sixteenth and seventeenth century it was common for landowners to borrow money from the church, using their land as collateral, and agreeing to pay "rents" in perpetuity. As long as these rents were paid, the principal need not be repaid, the mortgage being passed on to the heirs from generation to generation. But due to wars, fires and other circumstances, the original documents sometimes became lost, and since the original parties were often long dead, claims became difficult to prove. In 1681 the "Predikant" of the Church in Genderen made a copy of all the rents paid to the Church over the previous years, using the 25 year old Rentbook owned Dirck Willemszn Versteegh. Dirck declared that all the rents were still valid, and that he had collected them up to the year 1677, probably in his capacity of Kerkmeester of Genderen.
On January 17, 1682 Dirck acted on behalf of his niece, Sijken Ariensdr Camerat, the 5 year old daughter of his deceased sister Adriaantje Willemsdr Versteegh. Also mentioned in her will was her husband, Arien Gossen Camerat and Antonij Claeszn van der Steeghen, the illegitimate son she had borne to Claes van der Steeghen, the Schout of Genderen.
