Hi Tijmen!
Thanks for your response. I am the great great granddaughter of Derk Ten Cate and Berendina Oonk. Derk immigrated to Michigan in 1848. He was born June 18, 1828 and was the son of Jan Herman Ten Cate and Johnanna Knippenberg.
Derk had several brothers and sisters. One was Jan Hendrik Ten Cate who also immigrated to America and was married to Gerritjen van Oorspronk. Derk and Jan Hendriks family have really close ties to Ottawa County, Michigan (around the town
of Holland, They had another brother who died in the Netherlands named Josua Ten Cate who was married to Jacomiena Buitenhuis. They also had three sisters: Jenneke Ten Cate who married Evert Nijhuis, Driesjen Ten Cate who married Aart
Willem Zoet, and Gerritjen Ten Cate who married Reinder Reinders. I don't have much information on their descendants. I haven't been able to find any information on Genlias on marriages for their children. I believe that Gerritjen Ten Cate
and Reinder Reinders had a son named Jan Herman who immigrated to America and settled in Grand Rapids, Kent County, Michigan. He and his wife had a daughter who is reported to have been adopted. I haven't been able to find any death
information on Driesjen Ten Cate, but I believe that her husband, Aart Willem Zoet and a couple of his sons may have also immigrated to America, but I need additional evidence. I have absolutely no information on Jenneke Ten Cate and Evert
Nijhuis's descendants. Any help on this branch would be greatly appreciated.
I believe that Jan Herman Ten Cate was the son of Jan Hendrik Getkate and Jenneken Janssen Leuink. He may have had siblings named Aaltje, Nikus, Jenneken, and Willem. Any addition information on his siblings would be greatly appreciated
as well.
Do the Ten Cate's that you are in contact with connect at all to my line?
Groetjes,

Derk Ten Cate was born on June 13, 1828 in Apeldoorn, Gelderland, Netherlands. He was the son of Jan Herman Ten Cate and Johanna Knippenberg. Derk was one of seven children born to that union. His parents had another child named Derk who
was born Feb 27, 1818 and died at the age of 3 on May 16, 1821.
Derk Ten Cate came to America when he was a young man of 19 years of age. He came over on the G. Wichelhausen. The captain of that ship was H. Warken. The ship arrived in NewYork Harbor on May 11, 1848. The ship sailed the Atlantic for 64
days driven hither and tither by much storm. On the Monday following Easter two masts and a bowsprit were carried away by the waves. All men among the passengers who had any skill at carpentering were required to remove the broken pieces
and install new parts after the storm abated. On the ships list, it lists Derk's profession as a shoemaker. Derk had an older brother named Jan Hendrik who also immigrated to the Allegan County area. Many of his descendants moved on to
Iowa and Minnesota.
Derk Ten Cate was one of the early immigrants to Holland, Michigan area, arriving 1848, one year later than the acknowledged founder and leader of the Holland colony, Dr. A. C. Van Raalte. Derk, two years after arriving in America, at the
age of 22, married Wilhelmina Lucas, February 17, 1850, Fillmore, Michigan. The marriage was performed in the presence of Henrick Zaalmink and Johannes Rutgers. Wilhelmina was born in Hanover, Germany. At the time of her marriage, she was
27 years old. Wilhelmina gave birth to four children:
Steven: Born December 5, 1850-- record obtained from the Graafschap Christian Reformed Church
Truida: Born May 14, 1852 ------ Died April 28, 1898
John: Born February 12, 1854 Died February 23, 1908
Stephen Born in 1858
During his marriage to Wilhelmina Lucas, Derk obtained an 80 acre farm from the United States of America at the Register of the Lands office at Ionia. This transaction was completed March 1, 1855.
Wilhelmina passed away on April 25, 1858 and within two years, he was married to his second wife, Berendina Oonk, daughter of Jan Oonk and Geziena Willemina Ter Beek. To this union were born seven children, five of which grew to
adulthood.

died in September 1876, only six months after the birth of her youngest daughter. Her cause of death was Athsma.
Derk Ten Cate married a third time to a widow named Maria Doll. They married on November 13, 1877 Together they had one child named Derk Ten Cate. He died at the age of five months old. He is buried in the Ten Cate plot in the Graafschap
