Hello Phil,
thank you for your reply and far quicker than I expected, so you didn't have to apologise.
Yes, I have all the same details and more. My grandmother Dorothy who m Charles Cole were married in Brighton. On their marriage certificate it say's Charles of the 'High Seas' so obviously in the navy. One of the witnesses was Otto Amiet, I wondered how a German sounding name could be a witness to a naval man who just happened to be fight that nation. I then looked up to see who Rose Shapley m and yes, her husband was one Otto Amiet. I have a friend who's husband was a top fireman ar Lewes fire station amd just happened to be telling her this, and she said I know a David Amiet who is a fireman. He is a grandson of Rose and Otto. Clearly the family as on my mother's side of the my family just didn't keep in touch with one another.
Clara Chipperfield and her ancestor's were publican's which seem's about right, going by my father. They owned a pub in Gravesend, Kent, called the' Prince of Orange'. Clara did indeed marry Arthur McMahon whose first wife was a Elizabeth Cooper, who I wondered at the time whether there was a connection. They lived in Over Street, Brighton, which is by Brighton Station. I don't know if you are local?
The Shapleigh name, as I mentioned, started with Teutonic barbarians coming along the south coast, probably even Brighton, until they settled in Devon for the fertile land and strategic positioning. The name means sheep and leigh, meadow. Some were called Shapwyke, meaning sheep farm. These would of been of the same group.
Alexander Shapliegh b1585 became a merchant and shipbuilder and a certain Sir Fernando Gorges of, would you believe, the Isle of Wight, yes, commisioned Alexander to build a boat and off they sailed and were the founder's of Maine, USA. My husband' ancestor's Poirier now Perry went to Nova Scotia in 1641 same time as Shapleigh. Maineand Nova Scotia are next door to one another. Just amazing searching these tree's and quite excited that I have found a cousin.
My father had a brother Lesley, who m Gertrude Dine who had a Rosemary from first marriage, and then between them they had several children, who I no nothing about, my father m a Joyce Wilmshurst, I think, and they had several children. They werealll born in Brighton. It's relatively easy searching the record's of history but trying to contact one's own living family is not so easy.
Well, I apologise for my rambling's and promise I will not be a pest, but if you could from time to time keep in touch, or indeed if you live local, I would like to meet you. I will leave it all up to you.
Thank you,Annie
